3 Things All Boat Owners Should Focus On When Preparing for Winter

The boating season is nearing an end and it's time to start thinking about preparing your vessels for the cold winter. Winterizing your boat should be a top priority in the coming weeks. While there may still be a few nice days for a boat ride, you should be thinking about scheduling your fall boat lift maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks and your boat winterization. This week's blog is all about the three things you should focus on as winter comes our way.

Winterize Boat

It's important to winterize your boat and PWC before it gets too cold. During the winterization process, the fluids will be drained from your vessel. This can help prevent the liquid from freezing, expanding, and cracking an important component of your boat. This time of year is also a great opportunity to make any mechanical or cosmetic repairs. From buffing your paint to repairing a chip to breaking down the engine - winter is the best time to have these types of repairs completed. Your boat isn't being used anyway!

Prep Your Dock

Your dock goes through a lot as the temperatures drop. The floatation devices can be damaged by the lower lake levels of winter if your dock sits on dry land. The sharp rocks and tree branches in the lake can puncture these flotation devices, as well. If the water around your dock freezes, it can damage these tubs, as well. Your dock being frozen in one place can be rough on the structure, especially on the catwalk and connection lines. If you have water lines ran to your dock, consider winterizing it, as well. Another way to prepare your dock for winter is to ensure all the bracing and structure is sound and ready for the potential weight of ice and snow.

Check Your Lift

Your lift works hard during the off season. Not only does it hold your boat out of the water, but it also protects it from the harsh winter weather. Up on a lift is a safe place for your boat - as long as your lift is in good working order. That's where we come into play! This time of year is a great opportunity to ensure your lift fittings and bracing are all in place and tight. This is an important step as you get your lift ready for winter - especially if your boat is being stored up on a lift. The last thing you want is to find your boat in the water when checking on your dock this winter!
