Thank You Mr. John Woodruff

Well-known performance-boat enthusiast, John Woodruff brought his 48-foot Windship Marine Technology, Inc. catamaran and matching Bell Long Ranger L206 helicopter to several of the biggest boating events at the Lake of the Ozarks again this year! Summerset Boat Lifts had the honor of providing this awesome boat lift with a helicopter pad on top for Mr. Woodruff during the 2014 Shootout and Supercat Fest.

Mr. Woodruff has been flying helicopters since 1978. He bought his first helicopter in 1986 and flew it to the Key West World Offshore Championships.  Ever since then his love for performance boats, as well as helicopters has grown. Aside from three special occasions, Woodruff always flies the helicopter himself. Mr. Woodruff states "The Windship helicopter is my "car" and my passion." He said he would much rather sit in the chopper all day long at 500 feet, than go to Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport to board the germ bucket.

Is Your Boat Lift Ready for the Winter Weather Ahead?

The Lake of the Ozarks is expecting its first snow of the season this weekend!  With boating being one of the main activities here at the Lake, many homeowners are faced with extra preparation for Winter. In addition to winterizing your house, you need to be thinking about your boat, boat dock and boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks. Preventing the major damages caused by snow and ice by preparing now will save you a lot on costly repairs.

Damage by Winter Weather

During the Winter months, ice heaves can occur in lakes of all sizes and are especially dangerous where there is minimal insulating snow coverage.  Occasionally, the force of these ice heaves is powerful enough to move trees and other structures on lake properties.  More commonly though, the ice damages docks, boat lifts and retaining walls and displaces sod, leaving a lumpy shore line. Sustained frigid temperatures will freeze the surface water around docks, lifts and boats, causing all kinds of expensive repairs. When docks freeze, they become less flexible and do not move evenly as the water level reduces.  This major structural stress can break joints and twist boat lifts.

How to Avoid Ice Damage

When it comes to ice, the best preventative measure you can take is purchasing a de-icer.  A de-icer will create enough water movement to protect the boat docks and lifts from frozen waters.  For more information about de-icers, check out our blog entitled "As Summer Sets, Avoid the Deep Freeze!" In addition to purchasing a de-icer, you should have a professional come check your lift and add antifreeze to the hoses.  If you can prevent the water from becoming frozen solid, you'll be able to avoid the majority of damages caused by Winter weather!

Boat Dock Insurance

Depending on how bad the weather gets, damages can be unavoidable.  It is important that you have the proper insurance coverage for your Lake of the Ozark boat lift and boat dock.  You first want to make sure you have liability protection because accidents can happen no matter how careful you and your guests are.  You will also need to purchase physical damage coverage, which can typically be extended from your homeowners or fire insurance policy.  Be sure to include the value of your lift and any other attached items when advising your insurance agent of your docks value.  You should also check that your personal property, such as life preservers, fishing poles, etc, that are stored on the dock are also covered under your policy.  Collapse cover is also something to discuss with your agent.  Some companies automatically provide this type of coverage and others exclude it, so be sure you know exactly what you are covered for.

Summerset Boat Lifts provides outstanding boat lift service at the Lake of the Ozarks!  If you are unsure of your boat lift being prepared for Winter, give us a call at 573-348-5073.  Be surprised at how soon you may see a representative of Summerset Boat Lifts on your dock. We want to earn your trust and your business!

FAQs on Boat Lifts at the Lake of the Ozarks

When it comes to boat lifts at the Lake of the Ozarks, Summerset Boat Lifts is your premier dealer and the #1 source for industry knowledge!  If you're new to owning a boat lift, you may have a lot of questions. Summerset Boat Lifts is here to help you get those answers you're looking for. Here are some frequently asked questions we hear on a regular basis.

Q: Why do I need a boat lift?

A: There are many reasons to own a Lake of the Ozarks boat lift.  First, you don't have to worry about your boat sinking if its stored above water.  You also don't have to worry about it not staying tied to the dock and floating away.  In addition, boat lifts can increase the value of your boat because they keep them looking new over the years.  Leaving your boat sit in the murky Lake water can cause wear and tear on your boat.  Resale value will increase if you have a shiny clean hull free of grime and lake scum.  Storing your boat in the water is the primary cause of all damage below the water line.  Everything from lower unit wear to hull blisters can be prevented by storing your boat above the water line.

Q: What type of boat lift do I need?

A: Galva-Hoist is engineered at the Lake for the Lake...the Lake of the Ozarks.  The Galva-Hoist is extremely capable of withstanding the rough waters here at the Lake. From personal watercraft lifts all the way to custom 46,000 lb lifts, Galva-Hoist has you covered.  No matter what brand of boat or dock you have, the Galva-Hoist provides great value and performance all year round!

Q: What regular maintenance is required to keep my boat lift in great condition?

A: Your boat lift will definitely perform best if it is well maintained.  The rough water of the Lake of the Ozarks can really take a toll on your boat lift, so maintenance is key to extending its life.  By checking your lift to make certain that all pivot connections and bushings remain tight, you'll extend the life of your boat lift tremendously.  Its also a great idea to have your lift checked out by a professional regularly, especially going into the Winter months.  For more information on this subject, check out our blog titled, "5 Boat Lift Maintenance Tips You Can Perform Yourself."

Q: If I already have a boat lift and purchase a new boat, can my lift be adjusted for the new boat?

A: Most people think that their current boat lift just needs a little adjustment to fit a new boat. However, this is rarely the case.  Boat lifts are based upon balance and if the weight of the boat is not properly distributed, misloading can occur and cause damage to your lift and boat.  Depending on the length and weight differences between boats, the lift may have to be moved within the slip, along with the bunks that hold the boat being adjusted.  Please take the time to call your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer.

Q: My current boat slip is too large for my current boat.  How can I utilize the space and still have access to my boat?

A: If you've got a 16' wide boat slip, but your boat is only 8' wide, you'll want to consider how your boat lift will accommodate your needs.  By offsetting your boat in the slip, you'll have access to only one side of the boat.  This is where a walkway becomes a great feature to invest in. The walkway can be built to the length of your boat, therefore regaining access to the other side of your boat.  With guide posts to limit your travel and a walkway next to your boat, you've created a wet-storage situation where you can maintain and cover your boat with ease!

Q: How do I store my lift during the winter?

A: You can actually leave your boat on the lift during the Winter season if you want.  If you choose to do this, we recommend the use of a de-icer.  Frozen water can cause a lot of damage to your dock, boat lift and boat, but a de-icer can solve that problem.  Read more in our blog titled, "As Summer Sets, Avoid the Deep Freeze!"

At Summerset Boat Lifts, we pride ourselves in service and that's what sets us apart from everyone else.  We hope these questions and answers have helped with some of your concerns. If you have any further questions about boat lifts here at the Lake of the Ozarks, please don't hesitate to call us at 573-348-5073.

Do You Know the History of Halloween?

Halloween is one of America's most loved Holidays.  In fact, its the 2nd largest commercial holiday besides Christmas and the 3rd largest party holiday behind New Year's Eve and Super Bowl Sunday. Do you know the history behind the holiday though?  Why do we dress up in costumes and parade around town begging for candy?  Summerset Boat Lifts would like to take you back to the beginning, back to when the Holiday started!

The History of Halloween

Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition.  According to History.com, the holiday is thought to have originated with the ancient festival of Samhain.  November 1 marked the end of the Summer harvest and the beginning of a cold, dark Winter.  The Celts believed that on the night before this "new year," the boundary between the worlds of the living and dead became blurred.  It was believed that on October 31, the ghosts of the dead returned to the earth causing trouble and damaging crops. They also believed that the presence of these spirits made it easier for the Celtic priests to make predictions about the future, giving the people comfort and direction during the long, dark Winter.

Roman Impact

For the festival, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where everyone gathered to burn crops and sacrifice animals. They wore costumes typically consisting of animal heads and skins, while attempting to tell each other's fortunes. After the Roman Empire conquered the majority of Celtic territory, two Roman festivals were combined with Samhain.  Feralia was a day late in October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead.  The second festival was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees.  Her symbol is the apple and its incorporation into the holiday explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that we practice today with our Halloween celebrations.  In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saint's Day, a time to honor all saints and martyrs. The holiday incorporated many of the traditions of Samhain.  The evening before became known as All Hallows' Eve, which later became what we know today as Halloween.

Halloween Today

The first celebrations in America included public events to celebrate the harvest, where neighbors would share stories of the dead, tell each other's fortunes, dance and sing.  The festivities often included the telling of ghost stories and mischief making of all kinds.  Over time, the holiday evolved into a more secular, community event with kid-friendly activities like dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating.  Due to these efforts, Halloween lost much of its superstitious and religious overtones by the beginning of the 20th century.  As the days grow shorter and the temperatures start to drop, Winter is welcomed with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats!

As Summer Sets, Avoid the Deep Freeze!

Winter is just around the corner and the temperatures here at the Lake are already dropping. Before the snow, ice and freezing temperatures arrive, you should prepare your dock and boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks. Frozen water can cause a lot of damage to your dock, boat and boat lift.  This problem can be solved by adding a de-icer to your dock.  Summerset Boat Lifts has you covered with our Kasco De-Icers at the Lake of the Ozarks!

What is a De-Icer?

A de-icer is a device you can place on your dock to prevent ice formation and expansion which can cause costly damage to your property.  By providing superior thrust and water movement, a de-icer pushes the warm, bottom water to the surface to prevent or eliminate ice formation.  This creates an ice free area of protection around your boat, dock, pier or other property installed in the water during freezing tempuratures of the Winter season.  This ice free area will not only prevent damage from ice jacking and expansion, but it can provide protection for fish and other aquatic species by allowing for areas of oxygen to enter the water.

What type of De-Icer do I need?

De-icers are available in many different varities: 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP or 1 HP, and 120V or 240V.  A 1/2 HP de-icer will work well with a one-well dock or in a situation where you simply "bubble" your own slip in a community dock.  A 3/4 HP de-icer is suggested for two-well docks.  Multiple de-icers may be required for full coverage depending on the size of your dock.  Air / Water thermostats are also available to limit the run time.  The Summerset Boat Lifts staff is here to ensure you get the right de-icer for your dock!

De-Icer Features and Benefits

Kasco is the preferred De-Icer of Summerset Boat Lifts at the Lake of the Ozarks.  Their De-Icers are your best choice for ice prevention and property protection  The rugged and efficient design of the Kasco De-Icer delivers powerful performance with simplicity of use and operation. Features and benefits of the Kasco De-Icers include:
