Safety Tips for Being Around Water in the Winter

Many people think about being out on the water when the suns out and the temps are high. There are some instances when you may find yourself near or on the water during the winter months, as well. While boating safety applies to year-round boating activities, there are a few extra precautions you should be aware of if you plan to be around the lake this winter. Whether you're checking on your boat, out for a cruise, or casting a line, there are a some safety tips that should be top of mind. As the best boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we truly care about our customers and want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable experience near the water. We know how many awesome family memories can be made on the water and we strive to keep safety top of mind, if you choose to be near the water during the winter months.

Always wear a life jacket.

While this is not required by law for adults, it's a good idea to wear a life jacket when you are on or near water, especially in the winter months. Falling into the water when temperatures are freezing can quickly send your body into shock, making it difficult or impossible to breathe.

Share your plans.

It's encouraged to let someone on land know your plans for the day. Whether you're going down to the dock for an hour or out on the water for a day, ensure your plans are known. Also, let the person you share your plans with know your whereabouts and the estimated time of return, in case someone needs to send help.

Be aware of other boaters.

While there are less and less boaters out on the lake during the late fall and winter months, it's still important to be aware of what's going on around you. You may have let your guard down this time of year when there's not as many boaters but you should always be thinking about others on the water near you.

Dress in layers.

Layers make it easy to remove some clothing, if needed. This can also help keep some body heat in, if it is cooler than you planned for. Dress warmer than the air temperatures calls for, if you're spending time near the water. Many times the winter breeze and cool air off the water can make it feel even cooler than the air temp.
