National Safe Boating Week is here and that means it's time to refresh some boating safety tips. Just in time for the big holiday weekend and kick off to summer, our boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help point out some tips to keep you & your crew safer out on the water. Check out our safe boating tips & be sure to practice safe boating this holiday weekend!
Always Wear a Life Jacket
A life jacket can save a life. Many people think they don't need a life jacket because they are a good swimmer. Being a good swimmer doesn't help if you are involved in a boating accident. You may be disoriented or even worse, unconscious. It's always a good idea to keep a life jacket on when boating.
Be Aware of Surroundings
Just like on the highway, the traffic on the water can change in an instant. When driving a boat, you must be aware of all other boaters on the water, and other objects along the water. This can help you more safely navigate your way through boat traffic and in and out of busy boating areas. If you aren't comfortable in the type of area, consider staying in a less crowded part of the water.
Designate a Sober Captain
If you plan on drinking out on the water, make sure you have a designated captain to safely operate your vessel. Just like getting behind the wheel of a vehicle, driving a boat is a big responsibility and having your complete attention is vital for a safe boating experience.
Share Your Boating Plan
Make sure someone on land knows your plan for your time out on the water. If you haven't returned within your estimated plan of arrival, the contact on land will know that something isn't right and they can take the necessary actions to help find you.
Check The Weather
Missouri weather can change in an instant. Keep tabs on the weather conditions and head back to shore if the weather takes a turn. Summer thunderstorms can be very dangerous out on the water. It's best to stay ahead of a storm that may be rolling in & get back to your dock before the weather hits.
As you plan to get out on the water in your boat this holiday weekend, keep these safety tips in mind. These tips are to keep you & everyone else on the water as safe as possible.
