Fourth of July Fireworks

Who's ready for a 4th of July celebration this weekend? On the water at the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks is where the party is at! From family-fun festivities to fireworks over the water, there's no better place to be this weekend. Today's blog from the best boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks discusses why we shoot off fireworks for the 4th of July holiday and where you can watch them this year!

Why We Shoot Off Fireworks for 4th of July

For Americans, 4th of July has long been associated with fireworks. Why? The simple explanation is because John Adams wanted us to! Before the Declaration of Independence was even signed, he envisioned a celebration with bright colors exploding in the sky. In a letter he wrote to his wife on July 3, 1776 stated the occasion should be commemorated "with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more." The first Independence fireworks were set off on July 4, 1777 in Pennsylvania. That same year, fireworks also lit up the sky in Boston. By 1783, a large variety of fireworks were available to the public. Today, 4th of July firework displays have evolved into elaborate, choreographed pyrotechnic shows, and smaller versions of them are available for people to enjoy at home with their families. The American Pyrotechnics Association estimates that more than 14,000 firework displays light up the nation's sky at each Independence Day. Where will you enjoy fireworks this 4th of July?

Avoiding Heat-Related Illnesses While on the Lake This Summer

Often times, environment and physical conditions can make it difficult to stay cool. The boating environment is one of those! You're out in the hot, open air, sun blazing down on you with no air conditioner and often times no shade. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer offers information on some common heat-related illnesses and what you can try to do to prevent them:

The most common illness people experience during the hot summer months is dehydration. When you're spending an entire day, or weekend for that matter, out on the water in the hot sun, you have to make sure you drink enough water. Drinking alcohol also increases your risk of dehydration; so in that case, drink extra water. Dehydration and fatigue can both lead to or make worse other heat-related illnesses described below.

A sunburn is a form of radiation burn that affects living tissue, such as skin, that results from an overexposure to the ultraviolet rays (sunshine). Often times, you don't realize you have a sunburn until after you've left the sun and go inside or wake up the next morning. Depending on the severity of your sunburn, it can cause other illnesses like nausea. Make sure you wear plenty of sunscreen to avoid burning when you're out on the boat this summer. It's also a good idea to have a hat and swimsuit cover up or t-shirt to help shade your body from the suns rays.

Heat Edema

Heat edema is swelling of the legs and hands. It occur when you sit or stand in a warm environment for too long. This can happen if you're sitting or standing on a boat in the middle of July for too long. Be sure to take breaks, dock up somewhere to grab some food and a cold beverage or jump in the lake to cool off for a bit. To avoid heat edema, be sure to drink plenty of water, watch the foods you eat and avoid being stationary for too long. If you do start to see swelling, move to a cool place as quickly as possible and elevate your feet. You can also try to massage them carefully.

Heat Exhaustion

Another common heat-related illness is heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion is identifiable by heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat, muscle cramps, nausea and headache. This generally develops when someone is working or exercising without drinking enough liquids. Exercising, such as swimming or watersports, could cause heat exhaustion if you're not drinking enough water. Some ways you can try to prevent heat exhaustion include: wearing light-weight, light-colored clothing, drinking plenty of liquids, avoiding vigorous activity in the heat and avoiding a sunburn!

Heat Stroke

Heat Stroke occurs when the body fails to regulate its own body temperature and your body temperature continues to rise. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and even with immediate treatment, can be life-threatening or cause serious long-term problems. This illness is often a progression from a milder heat-related illness. If you experience any of the symptoms of heat exhaustion, take immediate action to cool your body down. You want to address the situation before it worsens and leads to heat stroke.

Summerset Boat Lifts wants you to enjoy your summer at the lake without experiencing any of these heat-related issues. The best thing you can do is drink plenty of water to help keep your body cool. Remember, if you're in need of any Lake of the Ozarks boat lift service or maintenance, give us a call at 573-348-5073!

5 Boating Tips to Keep You Safe on the Water This Summer

There's nothing better than cruising around the Lake on your boat under the summer sun! Boating season is well underway at the Lake of the Ozarks. Stay safe on the water this summer by keeping these boating tips from Summerset Boat Lifts in mind:

1. Don't Overload Your Boat.

While we want everyone to have a good time, boats have capacity limits for a reason. You get too much weight on a watercraft and it could sink. You also don't want anyone accidentally getting knocked overboard because the boat is too crowded. Be sure to check the capacity number of your boat or your rental boat before inviting people aboard. If you have too many people in your party, take turns boating while the rest of the group stays at the dock swimming, etc.

2. Maintain a Safe Speed.

The Lake of the Ozarks can get pretty busy with boats in the summer months, especially on holiday weekends. Be sure to cruise at a safe speed and always be aware of your surroundings. Not only do you want to keep everyone in your boat safe, you also don't want to risk hitting anyone else on the water. Unless you're participating in an actual boat race, like Lake Race or the Shootout, try slowing down.

3. Watch the Weather.

One thing that's extremely unpredictable is the weather. You don't want to get caught far away from home on your boat when a storm rolls in. Look up the weather before heading out, even if it seems like a nice, sunny day. If a storm is expected, don't venture too far from your dock. You don't want to be out on the water during a storm.

4. Ensure Personal Flotation Devices are On Board.

Before departing for the day, make sure that each person on board has a PFD that fits properly. Not only is it a safe boating practice, but it's required by law to have them on board. In addition, children must wear them at all times while on board a watercraft. Be sure to also have a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, marine radio and other safety equipment on board.

5. Avoid Drinking Alcohol and Driving.

Just like with cars, drinking and driving don't mix! Be sure that if you're going to be drinking alcohol on the boat, you have a designated driver. You also want to make sure to limit the alcohol intake of those on board; you want to make sure everyone stays safe. You don't want anyone stumbling overboard or getting sick on the boat. The heat from the summer sun also increases the affects of alcohol. Be smart!

Summerset Boat Lifts wants you to be safe on the water this summer! When it comes to your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift needs, we're here to help. From boat lift sales to the repair and maintenance of them, we've got your covered. Give us a call at 573-348-5073 for any boat lift related questions!
