Preparing for the 2018 Boating Season

The official start of spring is March 20th, which is just around the corner! Now's the time to start thinking about de-winterizing your boat for the 2018 boating season. After sitting unused all winter, your boat, dock and boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks should be inspected to ensure proper working conditions. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer offers some tips for de-winterizing your boat and getting everything ready for the upcoming season.

1. Inspect Your Boat, Lift and Dock for Visible Damage.

One of the first things you want to do when preparing for the spring season at the Lake is inspect everything for any noticeable damage. During the winter season, a variety of weather-related issues can arise. Did the wind knock debris onto your dock? Did ice formations create any problems? You want to make sure your dock is safe for friends and family to be on, that the lift is in proper working condition and your boat isn't damaged in any way.

2. Schedule Your Spring Boat Lift Maintenance.

After sitting unused all winter, your boat lift needs special attention. The changes in weather and temperature can affect your boat lift in a variety of ways. Before using it for the season, consider having Summerset Boat Lifts come out to look it over. We'll ensure your boat lift is in proper working condition and is ready for the upcoming boating season. We pride ourselves on service, and that's what sets us apart in the industry. We want you to relax knowing your boat lift needs are being handled by a professional.

3. De-Winterize Your Boat.

Once you've inspected the exterior of your boat for visible damage, it's time to start the de-winterizing process. Everything from the engine to the gas tank and the belts will need to be inspected before you hit the water for the 2018 season. If you didn't change your boat's oil last season, now's the time to do so. While winterizing your boat, you should have drained the cooling system to avoid freezing, but even so, you will want to examine all hoses for any cracks or breaks. Check all the fluid levels and refill any of them that are low. Check the boats battery to ensure it's holding a charge, and inspect all the electrical connections for clean, tight, corrosion free connections. Also, be sure to check the fuel system and change the fuel filter. If you did not use an additive to prevent contamination, you'll want to drain the gas from the tank as it's likely stale. Be sure to check your owners manual for other de-winterizing information about your particular boat.

4. Schedule an Electrical Inspection.

A common part of the de-winterizing process that's often overlooked is the electrical situation on your dock. The winter weather can cause electrical issues on your dock, and it's important that you have your dock inspected to ensure all the electrical wires, outlets, etc. are in proper working condition before you start using them for the season. Electricity and water don't mix, so this a crucial step in preparing for the upcoming boating season to ensure your family and friends are safe on your dock. Many companies even offer free inspections!

Follow these steps and you'll be ready to hit the water! To schedule your spring boat lift maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks, give us a call at 573-348-5073 today. Summerset Boat Lifts is here to take care of all your boat lift needs at the Lake! From boat lift maintenance and repairs to the sale of new and used lifts, we've got you covered.

Boat Lifts: Making Boat Maintenance Easier

The best way to protect your boat and reduce your boat maintenance costs is to invest in a boat lift. All boats require regular maintenance, but with the help of a Lake of the Ozarks boat lift to keep your boat up out of the water, that maintenance can be significantly reduced. Keep reading to learn more about the ways that a boat lift can make your boat maintenance easier.

1. Keeps Your Boat Clean.

One of the biggest benefits of storing your boat on a lift rather than down in the water is that is keeps the bottom of the boat clean for longer. Boat cleaning is a regular maintenance task that becomes much easier and much less frequent when the boat isn't constantly sitting in the water. When the boat sits in the water for long periods of time, algae and other contaminants can attach to the hull. This makes cleaning your boat much more difficult, requiring more cleaning time and higher maintenance costs.

2. Avoid Hull Delamination.

A common issue with boats that are stored in the water for long periods of time is hull delamination. Delamination is the separation of layers of fiberglass cloth and resin from each other or from the core sandwiched between the layers. This is caused by physical stress to the hull, which ruptures the surface skin and allows water to enter and migrate to the core. When an area of the boat is delaminated, it becomes substantially weaker, which can lead to other issues with your boat. By lifting your boat out of the water with a Summerset Boat Lift, you can prevent that delamination from occuring.

3. Prevent Intake Fouling.

Barnacles and zebra mussels can clog raw-water intakes and cause engine-cooling problems. If your boat is stored up on a lift instead of in the water, organisms won't have the ability to attach to the boat or work their way into the intake system. While anti-fouling paint and products are available, storing your boat on a lift is the best way to prevent intake fouling.

By investing in a Lake of the Ozarks Galva-Hoist boat lift, your boat will stay dry and out of the water when not in use. This will keep the integrity of your boat in tip-top shape, so you don't have to worry about it and can just enjoy the water! To get a lift for your boat, give us a call at 573-348-5073.

3 Ways to Take Advantage of Lower Lake Levels

Each winter season, Ameren lowers the water levels of the Lake of the Ozarks in order to make room for the excess water from the heavy spring rains to come. At the beginning of April, Ameren will begin to raise the lake level again. The goal is to have the lake back to full pool by late May, just in time for boating season. Until then, waterfront property owners can take advantage of the lower lake levels to maintain their boat docks and boat lifts at the Lake of the Ozarks.

1. Get Your Dock Inspected.

When the water levels are low, it's much easier to check the dock for any issues. This is an excellent time to check the electric. Make sure your dock is well-grounded and that all the electrical connections are sound. Most electric companies at the Lake of the Ozarks offer free dock inspections. You want to make sure that your dock is safe before the upcoming boating and swimming season, when you and your family are regularly on the dock and in the water around the dock.

2. Conduct Any Necessary Repairs.

If your dock is in need of repair, now's the time to get those items checked off your list. Not only do you not want to be doing those items while everyone is enjoying the warm weather and time on the lake, but the docks are more accessible with the water levels down. Low lake levels create the perfect opportunity to install rip rap on your dock or repair the sea wall.

3. Schedule Boat Lift Service.

While you're getting your dock inspected, it's also a good idea to have your boat lift looked over. Now is the ideal time to contact Summerset Boat Lifts for all your boat lift service and maintenance needs, before business picks up for the season. Not only will it be easier to get an appointment this time of year, but you'll be ready to hit the water as soon as the weather warms up. Any damages can be prepared ahead of the start of boating season.

For all your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift needs, trust Summerset Boat Lifts. We can take care of everything from new and used boat lift sales to repairs and boat lift service at the Lake of the Ozarks. Give us a call at 573-348-5073 to schedule an appointment with us today!

Guide to Purchasing the Perfect Boat

Boating season is just around the corner. Whether you're thinking about buying a boat for the first time or you're looking to make an upgrade or change, this guide from the best Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company will help you through the boat buying process.

1. Determine the Type of Boat You Want to Buy.

With thousands of different boats to choose from, where do you start? Think about what you're planning to use the boat for. Do you want to take it fishing? Do you want to pull your children around on an inflatable tube? Do you want to enter it in racing competitions? The way in which you plan to use your boat will help you determine what type of boat you should buy. Then you can go from there to narrow it down to the style, model, etc.

2. Choose Between a New or Used Boat.

Just like with a vehicle, a boat is a big investment. Not only do you need to think about purchase price, but also insurance and maintenance costs. While a brand new boat may have a hefty price tag, you may not have to put quite as much into maintenance costs as you would on a used boat. If you do choose to buy used, don't just look at the price tag. Be sure to have the boat inspected and determine any initial repair and maintenance costs. Also take into consideration that new boats will come with a warranty, while used boats likely will not.

3. Attend a Boat Show.

If you are new to boat buying or just aren't sure where to start, a boat show can be a great experience for you. Here you are able to check out a variety of different boats all in one place. You can talk to the dealers, ask any questions you want and compare different models easily. While the internet is great for preliminary research, seeing the boats in person can give you a better idea of what you want and don't want.

4. Narrow Down Your Options.

Think about all the boats you've looked at; hopefully, you've started a list of boats that interest you. Now it's time to start another list, of what you want in a boat. Are there certain features you can't live without? How many people does your boat need to hold at one time? Split your list into needs and wants; this will help you check off boats from that first list that don't meet your criteria.

5. Take a Test Drive.

Once you've narrowed down your list, it's time to take some test drives. You know how you love the way a car looks, then you hop in the drivers seat and just don't like the way it drives? The same thing can happen with a boat. If possible, you'll want to test drive your boat before you actually buy it. The way a boat handles and the way it feels on the water are very important considerations.

6. Find the Right Dealer.

Once you've settled on what boat you'd like to purchase, make sure you get it from the right dealer. Be sure to find someone who's reputable in the community. Ask around for the best places to buy a boat, and read online reviews, not just about the boats, but about the dealers. Shop around for not only the best deal, but the best people you can find to work with, someone you can trust with such a big purchase.

Once you've found the perfect boat, you're going to need a boat lift to go with it! Trust none other than Summerset Boat Lifts for the best selections on the market. We are your premier boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks! Give us a call at 573-348-5073 to find a lift to match your needs.

When you don't have a lift, you have to deal with dragging your boat to a launch site, getting it off the trailer, driving it over to your dock, and then getting it ready for a day out on the water. By having your boat on a lift, you can store your boat in the water during the off-season and when the warm weather arrives, you're ready to roll. You won't want to waste any time, so be prepared for spring by getting your lift now!

3. Get Quick Installation of Your Lift.

During the off-season, boat lift installers aren't nearly as busy as they will be when spring rolls around. Those people that haven't touch their lifts since last season will be calling for maintenance and service. Therefore, now is the best time for new installs if you want it done quickly. Get ahead of the game and schedule the installation of your lift by the professionals at Summerset Boat Lifts. Not only will we get you setup with an awesome Galva-Hoist boat lift, but we'll be on your dock showing you how to use it properly.

Safety Tips for Dealing with Possible Winter Dock Damage

Winter weather can present dangerous conditions on your boat dock. While it's best to avoid your dock in inclement weather, if you must get on your dock, use extra caution. Below you will find some winter dock safety tips from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company.

1. Use Extra Caution When Removing Snow and Ice from Your Dock.

Dock owners often get concerned about the weight of snow and ice on their dock. It is possible, after a major snow storm, for that added weight to cause your dock to collapse. First and foremost, it's important that you have proper insurance to cover any incidents such as this. If you feel the need to remove snow and ice from your dock, be sure to use extra caution. Never go onto an icy dock alone, as it's easy to slip and fall into the water. Falling into frigid winter lake waters can cause hypothermia. When getting on a dock during the cold winter season, be sure to wear a life jacket and always use the buddy system.

2. Beware of Ice Damage to Your Dock.

During the winter season, ice can easily form on the top of the lake. That ice can slam into your dock causing damage. Be sure to inspect your dock for any damages and make sure it's completely secure. Icy conditions also weaken dock cables, which may need to be replaced before using the dock the following spring season. The best way to prevent ice damage to your dock is to invest in a de-icer for your dock. Kasco de-icers can be purchased from Summerset Boat Lifts!

3. Treat All Wires as Live Wires.

Water and electricity do not mix! It's important to use extra caution when dealing with wires on your dock. Winter weather can easily cause wires to become loose, frayed or damaged. When dealing with any wires, treat them all as live wires, even if you think you've shut off the power to your dock. If you suspect electrical damage on your dock, it's best to contact a professional electrician to inspect it and perform any necessary repairs.

Summerset Boat Lifts wants to make sure you, your dock, your boat and your boat lift all stay safe this winter season! While we don't know what's in store for us this winter, it's best to prepare now. From investing in a de-icer to ensuring your dock is in tip-top shape, preparing your property now can save you from costly repairs down the road - and will ensure your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift, dock and boat are all ready for use as soon as spring rolls around!
