4 Common Heat-Related Illnesses to Avoid This Summer

It's summertime, and that means extremely hot temperatures. While it's fun to be out on the water during hot summer days, it's important that we take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Today's blog from the best boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks discusses some common heat-related illnesses and how to avoid them.

1. Dehydration.

The most common heat-related illness is dehydration, and it's very easy to get it on a hot summer day. Dehydration is a harmful reduction in the amount of water in the body. When it's hot out, your body uses more water, and therefore, you have to replenish it to avoid becoming dehydrated. Whether you're spending hours out boating, swimming or hiking, it's important that you make sure to drink enough water. Drinking alcohol also increases your risk of dehydration.

2. Sunburn.

Another extremely common heat-related illness, or rather sun-related illness, is sunburn. A sunburn is a form of radiation burn that affects living tissue, such as skin, that results from an overexposure to the ultraviolet rays (sunshine). Often times you don't even realize you've gotten a sunburn until the next morning. When you're out in the sun, especially when on the water, you want to be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen. Consider wearing a hat, and avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

3. Heat Exhaustion.

Heat exhaustion is identifiable by heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, cool, moist skin with goose bumps, muscle cramps, nausea and headache. Heat exhaustion is most common when someone is working or exercising without drinking enough liquids. Exerting yourself during watersports on the Lake could cause heat exhaustion if you're not drinking enough water. Swimming while dehydrated can also lead to heat exhaustion. Some ways to prevent heat exhaustion include wearing light-weight, light-colored clothing, drinking plenty of liquids, avoiding vigorous activity and avoiding a sunburn. Both sunburn and dehydration can increase your chances of getting heat exhaustion.

4. Heat Stroke.

Heat Stroke is a more serious condition where the body fails to regulate its own body temperature and your body temperatures continues to rise. This is a medical emergency and even with immediate treatment, can be life-threatening or cause serious long-term problems. This illness is often a progression of one of the other heat-related illnesses listed above. If you experience any of the symptoms of heat exhaustion, take immediate action to cool your body down. It's important that you address the situation before it escalates to heat stroke.

5 Boat Dock Safety Tips to Keep in Mind

Spring has sprung and summer will be here before you know it! With boating season quickly approaching, we wanted to remind you how to keep yourself and your family safe on your dock. Summerset Boat Lifts wishes nothing more than for you to have fun and safe boating experiences this season - and that all starts with your dock. Keep reading for some safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Test Your GFCIs.

All docks are required to have a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). This measures a circuit's current and senses any imbalance (such as a discharge into the water), which then trips the GFCI and cuts off the power. It's important that you test your GFCIs regularly to ensure they are working properly.

2. Conduct Electrical Inspections.

In addition to testing your GFCI, you want to check all electrical connections on your dock. Make sure any lighting on your dock is working properly, as well as any entertainment equipment. Check al the wiring for corrosion, breaks and shots. You'll want to have a certified electrician examine everything at least twice per year to ensure your safety.

3. Watch Out for Ropes, String and Rigging.

Passersby can easily get tangled up in ropes and strings if not careful. When on a dock, always be aware of your surroundings. These items can also conduct electricity, so if they are exposed to nearby outlets, they can shock you.

4. Never Let Children on the Dock Unsupervised.

Children should never be left on a dock unattended. There are too many things that can go wrong, from slipping and falling into the water to getting electrocuted. For young children, you should ensure they have a life jacket on before nearing the dock. Also, make no running on the dock a rule for everyone to follow.

5. Clear Any Debris and Check for Damage.

Make sure that your dock is clear of any debris and personal items. You don't want anything blocking the walkways that could cause someone to trip and fall into the water. If your dock has debris from winter storms, be sure to check for damage as well after you've cleaned up the debris. Inspect the entire dock structure to ensure there are no weak spots or places that could be dangerous in other ways. Look for any areas that are splintering, any nails that might be sticking up, and mold or moss that could be slippery, etc.

After ensuring your dock is safe, you'll want to do the same for your boat lift. If you haven't already, now's the time to schedule your spring boat lift service at the Lake of the Ozarks with us. Give us a call at 573-348-5073 for all your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift needs!

Preparing for the 2018 Boating Season

The official start of spring is March 20th, which is just around the corner! Now's the time to start thinking about de-winterizing your boat for the 2018 boating season. After sitting unused all winter, your boat, dock and boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks should be inspected to ensure proper working conditions. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer offers some tips for de-winterizing your boat and getting everything ready for the upcoming season.

1. Inspect Your Boat, Lift and Dock for Visible Damage.

One of the first things you want to do when preparing for the spring season at the Lake is inspect everything for any noticeable damage. During the winter season, a variety of weather-related issues can arise. Did the wind knock debris onto your dock? Did ice formations create any problems? You want to make sure your dock is safe for friends and family to be on, that the lift is in proper working condition and your boat isn't damaged in any way.

2. Schedule Your Spring Boat Lift Maintenance.

After sitting unused all winter, your boat lift needs special attention. The changes in weather and temperature can affect your boat lift in a variety of ways. Before using it for the season, consider having Summerset Boat Lifts come out to look it over. We'll ensure your boat lift is in proper working condition and is ready for the upcoming boating season. We pride ourselves on service, and that's what sets us apart in the industry. We want you to relax knowing your boat lift needs are being handled by a professional.

3. De-Winterize Your Boat.

Once you've inspected the exterior of your boat for visible damage, it's time to start the de-winterizing process. Everything from the engine to the gas tank and the belts will need to be inspected before you hit the water for the 2018 season. If you didn't change your boat's oil last season, now's the time to do so. While winterizing your boat, you should have drained the cooling system to avoid freezing, but even so, you will want to examine all hoses for any cracks or breaks. Check all the fluid levels and refill any of them that are low. Check the boats battery to ensure it's holding a charge, and inspect all the electrical connections for clean, tight, corrosion free connections. Also, be sure to check the fuel system and change the fuel filter. If you did not use an additive to prevent contamination, you'll want to drain the gas from the tank as it's likely stale. Be sure to check your owners manual for other de-winterizing information about your particular boat.

4. Schedule an Electrical Inspection.

A common part of the de-winterizing process that's often overlooked is the electrical situation on your dock. The winter weather can cause electrical issues on your dock, and it's important that you have your dock inspected to ensure all the electrical wires, outlets, etc. are in proper working condition before you start using them for the season. Electricity and water don't mix, so this a crucial step in preparing for the upcoming boating season to ensure your family and friends are safe on your dock. Many companies even offer free inspections!

Follow these steps and you'll be ready to hit the water! To schedule your spring boat lift maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks, give us a call at 573-348-5073 today. Summerset Boat Lifts is here to take care of all your boat lift needs at the Lake! From boat lift maintenance and repairs to the sale of new and used lifts, we've got you covered.

3 Reasons to Invest in a Boat Lift Early in the Year

With this brutal weather we've been experiencing, your boat might be the furthest thing from your mind. However, now is the best time to be thinking about your boat and your boat lift. Boat show season kicked off last weekend with the Overland Park Boat Show and more shows are quickly approaching. Whether you're buying a new boat for the 2018 season and need a new lift for it or you don't have a lift for your current boat, Summerset Boat Lifts is here to hook you up!

1. Take Advantage of Great Deals.

Boat show season is the time of year where you can get great deals on everything related to boating. If you're looking for the best value, now's the time to look at purchasing a lift. Our Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company offers everything from personal watercraft lifts to large cruiser lifts.

2. Be the First One on the Water.

When spring arrives, you want to be one of the first boats on the water! When you don't have a lift, you have to deal with dragging your boat to a launch site, getting it off the trailer, driving it over to your dock, and then getting it ready for a day out on the water. By having your boat on a lift, you can store your boat in the water during the off-season and when the warm weather arrives, you're ready to roll. You won't want to waste any time, so be prepared for spring by getting your lift now!

3. Get Quick Installation of Your Lift.

During the off-season, boat lift installers aren't nearly as busy as they will be when spring rolls around. Those people that haven't touch their lifts since last season will be calling for maintenance and service. Therefore, now is the best time for new installs if you want it done quickly. Preparing Your Dock, Lift and Boat for Winter

The winter season is quickly approaching and it's time to make sure your dock is prepared for the cold, winter weather. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer offers tips on preparing your dock and boat lift for winter.

1. Consider Purchasing a De-Icer.

To protect your dock, lift and boat from the icy waters during the winter season, consider purchasing a de-icer. Even if you're not storing your boat in the water, a de-icer will protect your dock and lift from ice damage. Ice can easily break up entire dock structures, as well as age the wood and even splinter the surface of the dock. A de-icer keeps the water around your dock from turning to ice. Purchase your de-icer from Summerset Boat Lifts today!

2. Winterize Your Boat.

Obviously the first step in preparing your boat dock for winter is to winterize your boat. The time and effort you spend on your boat now will affect your boats performance, or lack of it, when the season ramps back up. Prepping your boat now will save you time, effort and money when spring rolls around. In addition to winterizing the engine and other systems, make sure your boat is well covered with a tarp or other sturdy covering. Follow the owner's manual for all the steps involved in winterizing your particular boat.

3. Maintain Your Boat Lift.

Ideally, your boat lift should be maintained twice per year. Once in the fall (now) and once in the spring. Maintaining your lift is important for eliminating lost time on the water and reducing the likelihood of needing major boat lift repairs at the Lake of the Ozarks. By catching issues early, we can reduce major problems with your lift that could affect your boat and your dock. At Summerset Boat Lifts we service a variety of different types of boat lifts.

4. Make Sure You Have Insurance Coverage.

No matter how well you prepare your dock for the brutal winter weather, there's always a chance of something going wrong during a major snow storm. Therefore, it's important you have proper insurance coverage. Many people assume their homeowners insurance extends to their dock and lift, but that's not always true. In addition to the liability insurance, you'll want to make sure you have physical damage coverage that includes collapse due to heavy snow cover. The best way to make sure you're properly insured is to talk to a local, Lake of the Ozarks insurance agent.

Make sure your boat lift is in tip-top shape for when the season rolls back around by having us service it now! Summerset Boat Lifts is here for all your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift needs. From new and used lifts to service and repair, we've got you covered! In addition, we can supply you with de-icers and other accessories for your dock and boat. Give us a call at 573-348-5073.

In-Water Boat Storage All Year Round

As much as we wish it wasn't true, the winter season at the Lake of the Ozarks is quickly approaching. Along with the beginning of winter means that it's the end of boating season. Many people are starting to winterize their boats and get them ready for the cold weather to come. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer discusses how you can store your boat in the water all year round!

Winter Boat Storage

In the past, people would remove their boats from the water at the end of each season. The frigid waters of the lake during the winter months could form ice that would be damaging to a boat left sitting in it. Innovations in the boating industry have led us to the ability to store our boats in the water all year round now. The Galva-Hoist line of floating boat lifts from Summerset Boat Lifts allows your boat to be stored in the water without the boat actually touching the water. Complete dry storage is available in a wet environment. In addition, de-icers can be installed on your dock to ensure the water around your lift doesn't form ice.

In-Water Boat Storage

Being able to store your boat in the water all year round definitely has its benefits. One of the biggest benefits is that when the water warms up, your boat is available for immediate use. You don't have to haul it to the Lake and launch it again. Another benefit is that you don't have to pay to store it somewhere else. If you don't have a garage or somewhere to store it on your property, a storage unit could be quite costly. No matter the brand of boat or dock you have, the Galva-Hoist at the Lake of the Ozarks offers great value to keep your boat in the water year round!

Whether you're in need of a new lift or you just want to make sure your lift is in proper working condition to protect your boat through the winter season, Summerset Boat Lifts has you covered! We pride ourselves in service, and that's what sets us apart in the industry. We want our customers to relax knowing their boat lift needs are being handed by professionals. Give us a call at 573-348-5073 for all your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift service needs!

Lifts for Boats Large and Small

No matter the size of your boat, Summerset Boat Lifts can lift it! We are proud to offer the Galva-Hoist line of floating boat lifts, which provide quality and value. From personal watercraft lifts to custom 38,000+ lb lifts, the Galva-Hoist has your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift needs covered. Keep reading to learn more about the lifts we can offer you at Summerset Boat Lifts!

Personal Watercraft Lifts

Our personal watercraft lifts come in 3 styles: side-mount, single front-mount and double front-mount. The side mount PWC lift is ideal for those looking to save space, as the footprint on the dock is only 5 1/2 feet instead of 11 feet. The flagship of our PWC line, the poly tank front-mount unit is quite capable of withstanding any water conditions. The single-tank by design will hold your watercraft higher out of the water than a double-tank would. The double is an extension of our popular single tank design.

4,000 & 6,000 LB Lifts

The 6,500 lb lift is an ideal capacity for almost every tritoon on the Lake of the Ozarks. the mechanism and structure of the lift are well-suited for the rough waters that our lake has to offer during the busy summer months. From a 24 foot deck boat to a 27 foot tritoon with a 300 hp outboard, this is the boat lift for your needs.

8,000 & 10,000 LB Lifts

Our 8,000 lb boat lifts are unique to the industry in that the structure has c-channel on the bottom of the tanks, which allows the weight of the boat to be distributed across many more points than the competition. The 10,000 lb lift utilizes the same structure and mechanism, giving you the opportunity to grow into a bigger boat utilizing the same lift later on.

12,000 - 17,000 LB Lifts

Our 12,000 lb lift is a heavy-duty 6-arm mechanism designed for the rough waters of the Lake of the Ozarks. Our 14,000 lb lift is our first 3-tank system, and builds on the foundation of our 12,000 lb lift. The 17,000 lb lift caps off the trio of 6-arm mechanisms available. It is perfectly capable of lifting many of the 34 to 35 foot day cruisers.

20,000 LB & Bigger Lifts

Suited for many 37-41 foot day cruisers, the 20,000 lb lift is an 8-arm mechanism that features four structures that create a rigid box to dissipate the weight of the boat over many points on the lift and dock. The 24,000 lb lift is available in an 8-arm or 10-arm mechanism. The four tank system offers a superb weight to width ratio, offering great stability for your boat. Larger lifts can be custom built just for you! Your exquisite taste in big boats demands the best in boat lifts.

Our new boat lift sales at the Lake of the Ozarks is complimented by used boat lifts, as well as the servicing of all types of lifts. Whether you're in need of a boat lift or boat lift repairs at the Lake of the Ozarks, Summerset Boat Lifts is here for you! Give us a call at 573-348-5073.

20th Annual Spring Harbor Hop

A favorite among locals and vacationers alike, the spring harbor hop on May 6th is a great way to kick off boating season at the Lake of the Ozarks! Participants draw cards at more than 40 different locations across the Lake in hopes of creating a winning poker hand. Keep reading to learn more about this fun event celebrating it's 20th year in 2017!

About Harbor Hop

Participants can enter the Harbor Hop at any of the participating locations. Hands are obtained by signing up and paying an optional $20 donation. The first card is drawn at the checkpoint where the hand is purchased. Participants then "hop" to six more checkpoints, collecting one card at each stop. The hand is complete when the 7th card is drawn, and the hand is turned in at that checkpoint. This must be done by 7 pm. An optional 8th bonus card may be drawn for an additional $5.
