Tips for Boat Owners to Prepare for Winter

The boating season is coming to a close. As many boat owners at the Lake of the Ozarks start to line up their winterizations, it's time to think about your dock and lift, as well. Here at Summerset Boat Lifts, we know how important it is to ensure your lift is in prime working condition before the harsh winter weather hits. The freezing temperatures is NOT a time for your lift to break and let you (and your boat) down. Take a look below to learn a few different ways boat owners can prepare for the upcoming season!

Prepare your BOAT for Winter

It's important to winterize your boat and PWC before it gets too cold. During the winterization process, the fluids will be drained from your vessel. This can help prevent the liquid from freezing, expanding, and cracking an important component of your boat. This time of year is also a great opportunity to make any mechanical or cosmetic repairs. From buffing your paint to repairing a chip to breaking down the engine - winter is the best time to have these type of repairs completed. Your boat isn't being used anyway!

Prepare your DOCK for Winter

Your dock goes through a lot as the temperatures drop. The floatation devices can be damaged by the lower lake levels of winter if your dock sits on dry land. The sharp rocks and tree branches in the lake can puncture these flotation devices, as well. If the water around your dock freezes, it can damage these tubs, as well. Your dock being frozen in one place can be rough on the structure, especially on the catwalk and connection lines. If you have water lines ran to your dock, consider winterizing it, as well. Another way to prepare your dock for winter is to ensure all the bracing and structure is sound and ready for the potential weight of ice and snow.

Prepare your LIFT for Winter

Your lift works hard during the off season. Not only does it hold your boat out of the water, but it also protects it from the harsh winter weather. Up on a lift is a safe place for your boat - as long as your lift is in good working order. That's where we come into play! This time of year is a great opportunity to ensure your lift fittings and bracing are all in place and tight. This is an important step as you get your lift ready for winter - especially if your boat is being stored up on a lift. The last thing you want is to find your boat in the water when checking on your dock this winter!

Now that you know some of these tips for boat owners at the Lake of the Ozarks, you're ready to focus on protecting your vessel all winter long. From winterizing your boat to ensuring your lift is solid to keeping your dock afloat, there are a number of ways to protect your property this winter. If you'd like us to check out your lift, contact the best boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks today! Here at Summerset Boat Lifts, we'll have our trained and experienced staff on your dock and inspecting your lift in no time!

4 Common Heat-Related Illnesses to Avoid This Summer

It's summertime, and that means extremely hot temperatures. While it's fun to be out on the water during hot summer days, it's important that we take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Today's blog from the best boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks discusses some common heat-related illnesses and how to avoid them.

1. Dehydration.

The most common heat-related illness is dehydration, and it's very easy to get it on a hot summer day. Dehydration is a harmful reduction in the amount of water in the body. When it's hot out, your body uses more water, and therefore, you have to replenish it to avoid becoming dehydrated. Whether you're spending hours out boating, swimming or hiking, it's important that you make sure to drink enough water. Drinking alcohol also increases your risk of dehydration.

2. Sunburn.

Another extremely common heat-related illness, or rather sun-related illness, is sunburn. A sunburn is a form of radiation burn that affects living tissue, such as skin, that results from an overexposure to the ultraviolet rays (sunshine). Often times you don't even realize you've gotten a sunburn until the next morning. When you're out in the sun, especially when on the water, you want to be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen. Consider wearing a hat, and avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

3. Heat Exhaustion.

Heat exhaustion is identifiable by heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, cool, moist skin with goose bumps, muscle cramps, nausea and headache. Heat exhaustion is most common when someone is working or exercising without drinking enough liquids. Exerting yourself during watersports on the Lake could cause heat exhaustion if you're not drinking enough water. Swimming while dehydrated can also lead to heat exhaustion. Some ways to prevent heat exhaustion include wearing light-weight, light-colored clothing, drinking plenty of liquids, avoiding vigorous activity and avoiding a sunburn. Both sunburn and dehydration can increase your chances of getting heat exhaustion.

4. Heat Stroke.

Heat Stroke is a more serious condition where the body fails to regulate its own body temperature and your body temperatures continues to rise. This is a medical emergency and even with immediate treatment, can be life-threatening or cause serious long-term problems. This illness is often a progression of one of the other heat-related illnesses listed above. If you experience any of the symptoms of heat exhaustion, take immediate action to cool your body down. It's important that you address the situation before it escalates to heat stroke.

As your premier boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks, we are proud to offer the Galva-Hoist line of floating boat lifts. New Personal Watercraft Lifts

Whether you just got a personal watercraft for Christmas or you've had one for awhile and just never bought a lift for it, Summerset Boat Lifts has you covered! We offer 3 different types of PWC lifts at the Lake of the Ozarks to fit your needs:

Single Place PWC Lift

The flagship of our personal watercraft line of boat lifts, the poly tank front-mount unit is quite capable of withstanding any water conditions we might experience here at the Lake of the Ozarks. The single-tank, by design, will hold your machine higher out of the water than a two-tank system would. This means you WILL have dry feet when you want to maintain or cover your watercraft, GUARANTEED.

Double Place PWC Lift

Cruising around the Lake is always more fun with a buddy! If you have more than one PWC to lift, this is the way to go! The double-place personal watercraft lift is an extension of the ever popular single tank design. For considerable price savings over purchasing two singles, the double is the perfect solution. The double is also available with a full deck.

Sidemount PWC Lift

The side-mount mechanical personal watercraft lift is available for the homeowner with property line issues. It's a space-saver in that the footprint on the dock is only 5 1/2 feet instead of 11 feet. The capacity for this PWC lift is 920 lbs.

Whether you're in need of one of our personal watercraft lifts or a bigger lift, there's no better place to go than Summerset Boat Lifts! We pride ourselves in our service, and that's what sets us apart. We don't just sell you a lift, we sell you our service. Don't worry if you've never operated a lift, we'll have someone from our team on the dock showing you how it's done the first time you use your lift. Join Us at Supercat Fest 2017!

Coinciding with the Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is Supercat Fest! This is a gathering of the fastest, most exotic offshore marine hardware in the world. If you're a boat enthusiast, this is one event you will not want to miss. It's one of the coolest gatherings in the country! Ever year it gets bigger and better, featuring dozens of the latest and greatest go-fast catamarans and other offshore beauties. Join your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer at this event August 23-27!

Supercat Fest

Supercat Fest is a rather informal event, presenting an opportunity for a close-knit group of high-performance boaters to gather and enjoy the Lake. Many boaters start showing up on Wednesday, and the party rolls well into the weekend. Supercat Fest's "official" activities occur on Friday and Saturday night at Camden on the Lake. The festivities range from cocktail parties with live music to a fun run and fireworks displays. The event has always complimented the Shootout, specifically with the Stereo Shootout. This audio competition at Camden on the Lake offers another activity with more eye-candy and ear-candy than some of the other festivities. Supercat Fest is all about sharing in the common love of performance boating.

Associated Activities

Friday night is the Wet & Wild Pool Party at Camden on the Lake! Participate in the bikini contest or just enjoy a cocktail poolside. Check out all the amazing race boats while you're there! Dr. Zhivegas will be rocking the stage at H. Toad's Bar & Grill both Friday and Saturday night. In addition to the fun, this year's Shootout Benefit Live Auction will actually take place Saturday night at 8 pm at Camden on the Lake. The hope for this year's auction is to put a bigger emphasis on the fundraising part of this huge annual event. With all the generous sponsors and donations, the goal of once again breaking records in terms of the event's overall donations is within reach. For those who don't want to leave the resort, a big-screen viewing option will be available at Camden on the Lake this year. The large-format screen display will carry the live television broadcast from the two-day top-speed contest on he 3/4 mile course!

Our dock will be going up at Camden on the Lake on Monday - the helicopter will arrive Monday and the boat will be in the lift on Tuesday! Come out and see us at Supercat Fest 2017. Summerset Boat Lifts hopes you have a great time out on the water for these events! If you experience any problems with your lift after participating in the Supercat Fest or Shootout activities, give us a call at 573-348-5073. Fourth of July Fireworks

Who's ready for a 4th of July celebration this weekend? On the water at the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks is where the party is at! From family-fun festivities to fireworks over the water, there's no better place to be this weekend. Today's blog from the best boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks discusses why we shoot off fireworks for the 4th of July holiday and where you can watch them this year!

Why We Shoot Off Fireworks for 4th of July

For Americans, 4th of July has long been associated with fireworks. Why? The simple explanation is because John Adams wanted us to! Before the Declaration of Independence was even signed, he envisioned a celebration with bright colors exploding in the sky. In a letter he wrote to his wife on July 3, 1776 stated the occasion should be commemorated "with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more." The first Independence fireworks were set off on July 4, 1777 in Pennsylvania. That same year, fireworks also lit up the sky in Boston. By 1783, a large variety of fireworks were available to the public. Today, 4th of July firework displays have evolved into elaborate, choreographed pyrotechnic shows, and smaller versions of them are available for people to enjoy at home with their families. The American Pyrotechnics Association estimates that more than 14,000 firework displays light up the nation's sky at each Independence Day. Where will you enjoy fireworks this 4th of July?

Who Doesn't Want to Save Money?

Boat and accessory dealers have a lot of competition at these shows, so they'll be geared up to provide the best deals they can to get your business. Having multiple dealers in one place allows you to shop smart and be able to talk options and pricing. You'll also save money by being educated on the products so you can make the best purchase for your needs. Boat shows are also a great way to learn about important information such as where to go for boat lift services in the Lake of the Ozarks. Many service providers set up booths at these events too, so it's a great way to shop services you'll need after you buy.

Knowledge is Power

Whether you're a newbie or a seasoned vet when it comes to boats, there's always something new to learn. What better place to get that experience and knowledge than where the boating gurus go? Boat shows aren't just for looking at the pretty boats. They are a great opportunity to see not only the newest and best products out there. They're also a good way to see demonstrations on tricky processes and get hands on education for easier and safer boating basics to make you feel more comfortable on your boat.

Get the Family Involved in Your Hobby!

What better way to introduce your family to your boating hobby than bringing them along to check
out the big boats! Don't worry about finding a sitter. Most vendors know that having kid-friendly exhibits create more opportunity for families to attend. There are free samples, contests, and learning demonstrations for guests to partake in. Your family will thoroughly enjoy checking out the cool boats and getting educated on the hows and whys of boating safety and etiquette.

We have a variety of boating accessories available at our boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks. From ski ropes and life jackets to dock lockers and lift remotes, we've got something for everyone to enjoy during boating season at the Lake!

While life jackets may not seem like the most "fun" gift, they are required. In order to have fun on the water, it's important to have life jackets for every passenger on the boat. Pick up your new life jackets from your premier Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company

2. Dock Bumpers.

One of the last things you need is for your boat to get damaged, causing it to go in the shop and delay the use of your boat for possibly weeks. Protect your boat, and your dock, with our dock bumpers!

3. Tie Ropes.

Keep your boat securely tied up to the dock with a trusty rope! Summerset Boat Lifts has a variety of ropes for all your boating needs.

4. Ski Ropes.

Whether you're an avid skier or looking to try something new next summer, we've got your ski ropes and wake board ropes!

5. Dock Lockers.

Give the gift of storage with a dock locker. Maybe you already have all the accessories you need for a fun day out on the water, but do you have to drag them back up to the garage each time you take the boat out. By investing in a dock locker, you're able to safely and securely store all your favorite accessories right there on your dock!

6. Lift Remote Controls.

Firstmate offers a fast, safe and reliable way to control your boat lift remotely. Using their remote controlled systems gives you an extra set of hands from inside the boat, for getting your boat on or off the lift. Get your remote control from Summerset Boat Lifts today!

7. De-Icers.

One boating accessory that you won't have to wait until summer to use is a de-icer. The last thing a boat lover wants is for something like damage to their dock to delay boating when spring rolls around. Protect your boat dock and lift from the icy water this winter by investing in a device that moves water around to prevent the formation of ice near your dock.

For all things boating, you can trust Summerset Boat Lifts! We offer a variety of accessories to supplement your boat, boat lift and dock. 16 Fun Facts About Bagnell Dam

Without the construction of Bagnell Dam, which created the Lake of the Ozarks, we wouldn't have the need for our boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks. Since the dam plays a huge roll in our business, we thought providing a few fun facts about the dam in today's blog would be appropriate. Let's see how much of this information you already know - and maybe you'll learn something new about this beautiful Lake that we call home.

Bagnell Dam Fun Facts

1. The concept of Bagnell Dam dates to 1912, when Kansas City entrepreneur Ralph Street created a plan for a 60 ft. hydroelectric dam. After building support structures, roadways and railroad tracks, financial difficulties brought his venture to a close in 1926.

2. One year after Ralph Streets' venture ended, Union Electric (now AmerenUE) and Stone & Webster revitalized the project and expanded it to its present-day parameters.

3. Construction on Bagnell Dam started on August 6, 1929 and was completed in April, 1931.

4. The construction of Bagnell Dam created the Lake of the Ozarks, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the world and the largest in the United States at that time.

5.  During construction of Bagnell Dam, the Lake of the Ozarks was referred to as the Osage Reservoir or Lake Osage.

6. The total cost of the Bagnell Dam project was $30 million. Today, the same project would cost around $360 million.

7. Bagnell Dam is classified as a concrete gravity dam. That means that the weight of the structure is enough to overcome the lateral force of the water pressing against it.

8. The Bagnell Dam is 2,543 feet long and consists of three sections: the abutment section, the spillway section and the headworks or powerhouse.

9. The powerhouse consists of eight water-wheel turbines directly connected to eight electrical generators, plus one smaller station service unit. Originally only 6 of the generators were installed; the other two were added in 1953.

10. When the turbines are not in use, each of the openings is sealed by a headgate that measures 27 square feet and weighs 70 tons.

11. Under maximum head of ninety feet, the turbines revolve at 112-1/2 r.p.m. with a force equal to 33,500 horsepower each.

12. The generators were designed to produce a maximum of 21,500 kilowatts each.

13.  The overall dam structure was poured in 40-foot wide blocks that are designed to slide in the event of a breach. This prevents a total collapse from happening, and only one or two sections would move back while the remainder of the dam would stay solid and undamaged.

14. In the 1980s, holes were drilled down through the dam and tensioning rods were driven through those holes and into the bedrock below. The dam is actually more solid now than when it was built.

15. The highway deck of the dam is approximately 10 feet above full reservoir.

16. Although originally built to provide hydroelectric power, Bagnell Dam and the Lake of the Ozarks soon became a significant tourist destination for the Midwest.

4 Benefits of Having Your Boat on a Lift

When it comes to purchasing a boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks, you may think, "do I really need one?" The answer is yes! The cost of a boat lift only accounts for a small percentage of your boating expenses, while it will end up saving you even more in boat maintenance. In today's blog, Summerset Boat Lifts offers 4 benefits to having your boat on a lift:

1. Keeps Your Boat Cleaner.

The bottom of your boat requires regular cleaning, even with bottom paint. A boat lift will keep the bottom of your boat clean, free of grime and lake scum. Easily keep your boat's hull shiny and clean by storing it up out of the water.

2. Prevents Boat Damage.

The primary cause of hull blisters is from wet storage of your boat. In addition, wet storage can cause damage to out-drives, props and shafts. By investing in a boat lift, you can significantly reduce the possibility of these types of damage to your boat. Storing your boat above the water line will also reduce the amount of regular wear and tear on your boat.

3. Saves You Money.

Storing your boat on a lift can save you a lot of money in the long run. Not only will you save on repair and maintenance costs, but dry storage can significantly increase the resale value of your boat. A clean bottom enhances performance, saves fuel, increases range and eliminates the recurring cost of bottom painting.

4. Reduces the Risk of Your Boat Sinking.

Did you know that 85% of boats that sink, do so at their dock? A dead battery or a failed bilge pump is all it takes to lose your boat. When you invest in a Lake of the Ozarks boat lift, you can rest assured that your boat is protected. You also don't have to worry about it coming untied and floating down the main channel.
