The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide While Boating

Did you know that carbon monoxide poses a risk for boaters? The most common source of carbon monoxide is a gasoline-powered engine, which is found on the majority of recreational motor boats. Keep reading to learn about the dangers of carbon monoxide and how to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning while boating.

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that is essentially undetectable by the human senses. This gas is produced when an engine using a carbon-based fuel is running. Carbon monoxide can be very dangerous as it cannot be seen, smelt or tasted. The gas enters the bloodstream through the lungs. While exposure in a well ventilated area is generally not a problem, brief exposure in a more confined environment can lead to sickness. Prolonged exposure to higher concentrations could even be fatal. Due to the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning mimicking those of seasickness or alcohol intoxication, the poisoning is often overlooked, and those affected don't receive the proper medical attention.

Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide poisoning is preventable. Every boater should be aware of the risks associated with carbon monoxide, and how to prevent them. Below are a few tips to help in the prevention of carbon monoxide poisoning while boating:
  • Educate family and friends about carbon monoxide so they are aware of the early poisoning signs.
  • Be sure to maintain fresh air circulation throughout the boat at all times.
  • Keep your vessel maintained to ensure peak engine performance.
  • Properly install and maintain all fuel-burning engines and appliances.
  • Schedule regular engine and exhaust system maintenance inspections by experienced and trained technicians.
  • Be aware of areas where carbon monoxide could likely accumulate, such as inadequately ventilated canvas enclosures and engine compartments.
  • When tied to a dock, ensure your exhaust ports are not blocked. This can force exhaust, filled with carbon monoxide, back into the boat.
  • Never ride or hang on a swim platform where gases accumulate when the engine is running.
  • Be aware that traveling at slow speeds or idling in the water can cause carbon monoxide to build up in a boat’s cabin, cockpit, bridge and aft deck, or even in an open area.
  • Exhaust from another vessel that is docked, beached or anchored alongside your boat can emit poisonous carbon monoxide gas into the cabin and cockpit of your boat.
  • If carbon monoxide is suspected, open all windows, hatches and ports to increase ventilation.
  • Install and maintain a carbon monoxide detector on board your boat.

Summerset Boat Lifts hopes you have safe boating experiences at the Lake of the Ozarks. In addition to our boat lift services at the Lake of the Ozarks, we strive to educate boaters on safety. The Lake of the Ozarks is rated one of the best recreational lakes in the country, and we want everyone to be able to enjoy it safely. Happy Boating!

Labor Day Weekend on the Water

The last big boating weekend of the season is upon us! For some, Labor Day Weekend is the last chance to take the boat out with the family before winter sets in. Your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company wants you to have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend out on the Lake of the Ozarks.

Labor Day Weekend Safety Tips

With all those boats out on the water to close out the season, it's important you use caution. Keep these tips in mind while you're cruising around the lake this weekend:

  1. Make sure you designate a driver! While it's a holiday weekend and we know you want to have fun, make sure your captain is sober. Just like with cars, drinking and driving don't mix.
  2. Be sure to have enough life jackets on board for every passenger, and make sure that they are accessible. Children need to be wearing their life jackets at all times while aboard.
  3. Don't speed. This rule is especially important when there's a lot of traffic on the water. Operating at a safe speed will help you avoid a boating accident.
  4. Stay alert. Just like when driving, there can be a lot of distractions on a boat. Make sure your captain is aware of the surroundings and avoiding distractions.
  5. Steer clear of any large vessels or other watercraft that might be restricted in their ability to stop or turn.
  6. Follow a pre-departure checklist, which includes checking the horn, checking the lights, ensuring safety tools and spares are on board, topping off fuel and checking the oil, checking ventilation & the bilges, checking the battery and reviewing rules and documentation.

Labor Day Firework Displays

Labor Day Weekend just wouldn't be complete without watching some fireworks from your boat! Here's where you can catch the displays this weekend:

  • Bear Bottom Resort @ the 38 MM - Saturday at 9:45 PM
  • Bagnell Dam @ the 0 MM - Saturday at 9:00 PM
  • Inn at Grand Glaize @ the 1 MM of the Grand Glaize Arm - Sunday at 9:00 PM
  • Tan-Tar-A Resort @ the 26 MM - Sunday at Dusk
  • The Lodge of Four Seasons @ the 13 MM - 8:30 to 9:30 PM

Happy Labor Day Weekend from Summerset Boat Lifts! If you have any issues with your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift this weekend, be sure to give us a call at 573-348-5073. We've got all your boat lift repair and service needs covered!

Join Us at Supercat Fest 2017!

Coinciding with the Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is Supercat Fest! This is a gathering of the fastest, most exotic offshore marine hardware in the world. If you're a boat enthusiast, this is one event you will not want to miss. It's one of the coolest gatherings in the country! Ever year it gets bigger and better, featuring dozens of the latest and greatest go-fast catamarans and other offshore beauties. Join your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer at this event August 23-27!

Supercat Fest

Supercat Fest is a rather informal event, presenting an opportunity for a close-knit group of high-performance boaters to gather and enjoy the Lake. Many boaters start showing up on Wednesday, and the party rolls well into the weekend. Supercat Fest's "official" activities occur on Friday and Saturday night at Camden on the Lake. The festivities range from cocktail parties with live music to a fun run and fireworks displays. The event has always complimented the Shootout, specifically with the Stereo Shootout. This audio competition at Camden on the Lake offers another activity with more eye-candy and ear-candy than some of the other festivities. Supercat Fest is all about sharing in the common love of performance boating.

Associated Activities

Friday night is the Wet & Wild Pool Party at Camden on the Lake! Participate in the bikini contest or just enjoy a cocktail poolside. Check out all the amazing race boats while you're there! Dr. Zhivegas will be rocking the stage at H. Toad's Bar & Grill both Friday and Saturday night. In addition to the fun, this year's Shootout Benefit Live Auction will actually take place Saturday night at 8 pm at Camden on the Lake. The hope for this year's auction is to put a bigger emphasis on the fundraising part of this huge annual event. With all the generous sponsors and donations, the goal of once again breaking records in terms of the event's overall donations is within reach. For those who don't want to leave the resort, a big-screen viewing option will be available at Camden on the Lake this year. The large-format screen display will carry the live television broadcast from the two-day top-speed contest on he 3/4 mile course!

Our dock will be going up at Camden on the Lake on Monday - the helicopter will arrive Monday and the boat will be in the lift on Tuesday! Come out and see us at Supercat Fest 2017. Summerset Boat Lifts hopes you have a great time out on the water for these events! If you experience any problems with your lift after participating in the Supercat Fest or Shootout activities, give us a call at 573-348-5073. Staying Hydrated on the Lake this Summer

When you step outside, you can definitely tell that summer is here at the Lake of the Ozarks. This week in particular, is supposed to be extremely hot, with heat advisories lasting through Friday. The heat in combination with high humidity can cause dehydration. Summerset Boat Lifts wants to make sure you stay hydrated while enjoying the Lake this summer. Here are a few tips to help you avoid dehydration during the hot Missouri summer season:

1. Make Sure to Drink Enough Water.

When you think about dehydration, the first thing that comes to mind is that your body isn't getting enough water. Your body needs water to function properly and when it's hot and humid, your body loses water much faster. Water is the most essential nutrient. As a general rule of thumb, you should drink about half your body weight in water. So for example, if you weigh 150, you would want to drink 75 ounces of water per day. However, if you're exercising, you will want to increase your water intake. If you are heading out on the water for the day, be sure to bring enough bottled water with you to keep everyone hydrated throughout the entire day.

2. Regulate Your Water Intake.

In addition to the amount of water you consume each day, it's important that you pay attention to how often you are drinking your water. It's important that your water intake occurs in somewhat regular intervals throughout the day. Chugging a gallon of water and then not drinking anymore for like 6 hours isn't a good idea. There is a such thing as drinking too much water at once and you should spread your water intake out throughout the day. Keep in mind that thirst isn't a good indicator of hydration because if you're feeling thirsty, chances are you're already becoming dehydrated. Like mentioned before, bring plenty of bottled water with you for a day of fun in the sun, you don't want all the water to be gone at the beginning of your journey and then be thirsty the rest of the boat ride.

3. Mix Up Your Drinks.

While plain water is best, you don't have to only drink water all day to stay hydrated. There are other drinks that can hydrate you as well. Consider grabbing an ice cold smoothie, a sports drink, coconut water,or even a tea or coffee. I know what you're thinking, coffee can count as water? Well not exactly, but in a way yes. You don't want to just drink coffee all day and have no water, but coffee is a fluid and can be counted towards your water intake. According to a report by the National Research Council's Food and Nutrition Board, the amount of caffeine in tea and coffee does not discount the fluid in them. While it might not be easy to make a smoothie on a boat, you can easily pack some sports drinks in with the bottled water to offer some variety in drink choices.

4. Eat Your Water Too.

While it's important to drink enough water, you can also get water through the foods that you eat. In fact, according to the Institute of Medicine's recommendations, you should eat 20 percent of your daily water intake. Next time you're feeling thirsty, pile some delicious summer-friendly fruits and veggies on your plate. Watermelon, celery, cucumbers, strawberries and lettuce are all great foods to help you stay hydrated. Each of these foods contain various levels of water, as well as other important nutrients for the body. Instead of just packing salty chips and cookies, add some fresh fruit to your snacking menu on the boat. Fruit can easily be thrown in the cooler along with the bottled water to stay chilled throughout the day.

Your favorite boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks hopes you have a fun and safe time out on the water this summer! If you're out on the water and notice that someone else's lift or even your own lift might be in need of some boat lift repair at the Lake of the Ozarks, give Summerset Boat Lifts a call at 573-348-5073.

Why Fireworks on the 4th of July?

For as long as we can remember, Americans have celebrated America's birthday with a grand fireworks show. Why do we commemorate Independence Day by setting off a bunch of mini explosions? The history of fireworks in America is as old as the country itself. The reason we shoot off fireworks on the 4th of July is because John Adams wanted us too! Even before the Declaration of Independence was signed, he envisioned fireworks as part of the celebration. A letter he wrote stated that the occasion should be solemnized, "with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

With the massive amount of boats that will be on the water this weekend, there's a possibility your dock and lift could be damaged, especially if you live right on the main channel. Keep Summerset Boat Lifts in mind for all your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift repair needs! Have a fun and safe 4th of July weekend!

Small Boat, Big Boat, Short Boat, Long Boat - We've Got a Lift for Them All!

Lake of the Ozarks is well-known as a premier vacation destination in the Midwest. People from across the country come here for great entertainment, dining, shopping, and especially, boating! In addition to vacationers, the Lake area is filled with second homeowners. Chances are if you own a house at the Lake, you also have a boat dock, and that dock is going to need a Lake of the Ozarks boat lift! Lucky for you, Summerset Boat Lifts has a great selection of both new and preowned boat lifts to fit your needs!

Small Boat

We've got boat lifts for even the smallest of watercraft. Our jet ski and wave runner lifts are available in 3 different varieties: single place side-mount, single place front-mount or double place front-mount. The flagship of our PWC line, the poly tank front-mount unit is quite capable of withstanding any water conditions. If you're looking for a space-saver, check out the side-mount option.

Big Boat

Our 24,000 lb lift is available in 8-arm and 10-arm mechanisms. A 4-tank system, this lift offers a superb weight to width ratio in stability for your boat! Have a bigger boat than that? We can build a custom lift just for you! Your exquisite taste demands the best in boat lifts - and that's the Galva-Hoist from Summerset Boat Lifts!

Short Boat

Our 6,500 lb lift is an ideal capacity for almost every tritoon on Lake of the Ozarks. The mechanism and structure of the lift are well suited for the rough waters that our lake has to offer. From a 24 ft. deck boat to a 27 ft. tritoon with a 300hp outboard, give serious consideration to our 6,500 lb boat lift! Our 8,000lb boat lifts are unique to the industry in that the structure has c-channel on the bottom of the tanks, dispensing the weight of the boat across many more load points than the competition. Our 10,000 lb lift offers the same structure, making it a great bang for your buck, and the opportunity to grow into a bigger boat utilizing the same lift later on.

Long Boat

Our 17,000 lb lift is capable of lifting many of the 34 and 35 ft. day cruisers and is "best in class." Our 20,000 lb lift is an 8-arm mechanism ideally suited for many 37 to 41 foot day cruisers. The four structures on the top of the lift are duplicated below the tanks to create a rigid box that will dissipate the weight of the boat over many points on the lift and dock.

No matter your needs, Summerset Boat Lifts is here for you! Our boat lift sales are complimented by the servicing of many different brands of lifts. Give us a call at 573-348-50703 for more information. We're here to make certain you and your boat get the very best level of product and service at The Lake!

About Fireworks

While the 4th of July may be more known for fireworks, major displays have become an integral party of many holidays in America, including Memorial Day Weekend. For many people, especially children, the summer holidays just wouldn't be the same without them. Did you know though, that fireworks have been around a lot longer than we could imagine, and were actually invented in China, as somewhat of an accident. Many historians believe that as early as 200 B.C., the Chinese stumbled upon a sort of natural firecracker. In order to ward off evil spirits, they would roast bamboo, which actually explodes when it's heated due to its hollow are pockets. Eventually they started stuffing a volatile substance in the bamboo shoots, which created an even louder blast - and thus, fireworks were born!

Summerset Boat Lifts hopes you have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend enjoying fireworks from the water! If you have issues with your boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks this weekend, give us a call at 573-348-5073. We service a variety of different brands of boat lifts. We're lifting your dreams from canoes to cruisers!

Finding a Lift for Your Boat

Depending on what type of boat you have, you'll need to find a Lake of the Ozarks boat lift to match. The great news is that no matter what brand of boat or dock you have, Summerset Boat Lift's Galva-Hoist provides great value and performance! Let's take a look at what type of lift you'll need for your boat:

Personal Watercraft

Not only do your larger boats need to be lifted out of the water, but so do your personal watercraft! Obviously you're not going to want to put a jet ski on a regular size boat lift, which is why we offer smaller lifts to fit your personal watercraft perfectly. Whether you have just one jet ski that you take turns on or a pair of them to ride around together, we have the perfect option. Choose from a single sidemount, single place front mount or double place front mount.

Pontoons / Tritoons

Pontoons and tritoons are some of the most popular boat options on the Lake of the Ozarks. They offer enough room to get the entire group out on the water, and even offer the ability to pull a tube or skis. Our 6,500 lb lift is an ideal capacity for almost every pontoon or tritoon on the Lake.

Deck Boats

Deck boats are the perfect option for those that are all about tubing and skiing! The hull design of these boats get you on plane quickly with a smooth ride. While deck boats are typically a little smaller than a pontoon or tritoon, the 6,500 lb lift is a good option for deck boats as well. The structure of this lift is well suited for the rough waters that our lake has to offer.

Fishing Boats

Whether you're an amateur fisherman or you participate in tournaments every weekend, the Lake of the Ozarks is a great place for fishing. Summerset Boat Lifts can hook you up with perfect lift for your fishing boat. Depending on the size of your fishing boat, you could need anywhere from a 4.000 lb lift to our 6,500 lb lifts mentioned above.

Cruisers

Now if you think bigger is better and own a nice cruiser, we've got lifts for those as well! Our 17,000 lb lift is capable of lifting many of the 34 and 35 foot day cruisers. However, we can create custom lifts 20,000 lbs and larger if needed! No matter what you're looking for, the best boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks has you covered.

At Summerset Boat Lifts, we offer a wide variety of new and pre-owned boat lifts. From personal watercraft lifts all the way up to custom 46,000 lb lifts, we've got something to fit everyone's needs. In addition to the best boat lifts around, we offer exceptional service for all your boat lifts needs! Give us a call at 573-348-5073 with any questions.

International Talk Like A Pirate Day

What started as a goofy celebration among friends has turned into an international phenomenon! International Talk Like A Pirate Day is now celebrated every year on September 19.  Your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer is here to help you prepare for this excitin' holiday. To set the mood, have a listen to the Official Talk Like a Pirate Day Song!

Basic Pirate Lingo

Pirate lingo is rich and complicated, but here are a few words from TalkLikeAPirate.com for you to brush up on for this fun-filled weekend. For more pirate slang, check out this pirate glossary: www.PirateGlossary.com.

Ahoy! - "Hello!"

Avast - a phrase meaning to stop and give attention, such as "Check it out!" or "No way!"

Aye! - "Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did."

Aye aye! - "I'll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over."

Arrr! - not to be confused with "arrrgh" (the sound made when you sit on a belayin' pin), means several things such as "yes," "I agree," "I'm happy," "I'm enjoying this," the possibilities are endless.

Beauty - the best possible pirate address for a woman. It's always preceded by "me," as in, "C'mere, me beauty."

Bilge Rat - The bilge is the lowest level of the ship, and therefore it's an insult to call someone a bilge rat.

Bung Hole - Victuals on a ship were stored in wooden casks. The stopper in the barrel is called the bung, therefore the hole is called the bung hole. Use it when dinner is served to say, "Well, me hearties, let's see what crawled out of the bung hole."

Grog - an alcoholic drink, usually rum diluted with water, but can refer to any alcoholic drink besides beer. Water aboard ship was stored for long periods of time in slimy wooden barrels, so the rum was often added to kill the rancid taste.

Lubber - or "land lubber," which is the seaman's version of land lover, mangled by typical pirate disregard for elocution. It is someone that does not go to sea, but who stays on land.

Smartly - means do something quickly; you might say "Smartly, me lass," when sending the bar maid off for another round.
