Safety Tips for Dealing with Possible Winter Dock Damage

Winter weather can present dangerous conditions on your boat dock. While it's best to avoid your dock in inclement weather, if you must get on your dock, use extra caution. Below you will find some winter dock safety tips from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company.

1. Use Extra Caution When Removing Snow and Ice from Your Dock.

Dock owners often get concerned about the weight of snow and ice on their dock. It is possible, after a major snow storm, for that added weight to cause your dock to collapse. First and foremost, it's important that you have proper insurance to cover any incidents such as this. If you feel the need to remove snow and ice from your dock, be sure to use extra caution. Never go onto an icy dock alone, as it's easy to slip and fall into the water. Falling into frigid winter lake waters can cause hypothermia. When getting on a dock during the cold winter season, be sure to wear a life jacket and always use the buddy system.

2. Beware of Ice Damage to Your Dock.

During the winter season, ice can easily form on the top of the lake. That ice can slam into your dock causing damage. Be sure to inspect your dock for any damages and make sure it's completely secure. Icy conditions also weaken dock cables, which may need to be replaced before using the dock the following spring season. The best way to prevent ice damage to your dock is to invest in a de-icer for your dock. Kasco de-icers can be purchased from Summerset Boat Lifts!

3. Treat All Wires as Live Wires.

Water and electricity do not mix! It's important to use extra caution when dealing with wires on your dock. Winter weather can easily cause wires to become loose, frayed or damaged. When dealing with any wires, treat them all as live wires, even if you think you've shut off the power to your dock. If you suspect electrical damage on your dock, it's best to contact a professional electrician to inspect it and perform any necessary repairs.
