Equipment Needed for Winter Boating

Have you ever wondered how people living on boats survive during the winter months? If the lake freezes over, your boat could sustain serious damage from the ice. Not to mention, the temperatures inside the boat would be freezing cold and uncomfortable to live in. Take it from our Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company – there are a few pieces of equipment you need for successful winter boat living.

Shrink wrap

Most boats are shrink wrapped for winter as it works well to insulate and protect the vessel from the cold weather. As long as you leave a doorway to enter and exit, you can shrink wrap the rest of your boat to keep the cabin a comfortable temperature.

Insulation

Adding an extra layer of insulation to your boat’s hull can do wonders for keeping cold air out and warm air in. Insulation also helps reduce condensation inside the boat, keeping any moisture from turning into mold.

De-Icer

A de-icing system is designed to keep water moving around your boat to prevent ice from forming. The de-icer pulls warmer water up from the bottom of the lake or river, which then melts the ice sitting on top.

Electric Heater

If you don’t have a stove on your boat, a portable electric heater is another great option for staying warm. Just plug it in and enjoy the breeze of the warm air surrounding you. If you do have a stove aboard, then cooking a hot meal with also help warm up the cabin.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

If using an electric heater, make sure to setup a carbon monoxide detector on your boat. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas and when inhaled can cause illness and death.

So, it is possible to live on your boat throughout the winter months with the right gear to assist you. One thing is for sure – the more equipment you have, the more comfortable you’ll be. By implementing these five pieces of equipment, you will be prepared for winter on the boat without any struggle along the way.
