Spring Fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks

Spring is an essential time for those looking to fish at the Lake of the Ozarks. As the temperatures begin to rise, so does the need to grab a fishing pole and hit the water. Our Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company wants to discuss all the need-to-know tips and tricks that you can utilize this fishing season to ensure that your trip to the Lake of the Ozarks is one to remember.

Know What Fish to Catch

It probably goes without saying but knowing which fish you are after is going to greatly increase your odds of having a productive day at the Ozarks. Throughout the months of March and April, you will find an increase in bass, spoonbill, and crappie. You’ll need to plan the supplies to bring to ensure you are reeling in the right catches. Be sure to also keep in mind weather conditions that way your trip isn’t a bust.

Know Which Bait to Use

Before you can even think about catching anything, you need to make sure you are using the right bait for the right fish. Keep in mind that throughout the spring season, the main catches will be bass, spoonbill, and crappie, so you need to use the right bait for each fish.

Bass- Throughout this season, try using bait like jigs, finesse worms, or topwater lures to bait your fish to bite.

Crappie- These fish will migrate to the shallows, so you want to keep an eye out for areas such as brush piles, behind a dock, etc. Once you find a solid area, you will want to use bait such as minnows or various jigs.

Spoonbill- Due to the larger-than-life size of these fish, you’ll need to change up your traditional lures that you would use for your standard catches. You will also need to up the equipment you use given how heavy these fish can get up to! You’ll need to snag one by utilizing a braided line, weights, and large treble hooks.

Know Where to Find the Fish

Probably the most important aspect of getting a catch is knowing where to locate the fish you are targeting. In the spring, fish become more active, but the fish haven’t quite left the deeper portions of the lake, so you need to have some ideal spots in mind.

Bass- In the month of March, Bass are starting to move to shallower areas for pre-spawn season. But, come April is when you will find these fish more heavily in shallow areas, such as pea gravel banks.

Crappie- The season for Crappie really begins in April, as the temperatures become warm enough to move to shallower waters. Keep an eye out for protected areas near the bank, like a shallow walkway or a shallow brush pile.

Spoonbill- These huge fish typically begin to show up in March and can be found in grouped together in deep holes in the Lake of the Ozarks and in the Osage River.

Being prepared is an essential part of fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks. To ensure that you are getting the most out of your fishing trip, be sure to prioritize the three main areas we discussed above. Also, make sure your boat and equipment are up to for the challenge of catching some big ones! If you haven't had a boat lift inspection at the Lake of the Ozarks yet this year, it's time to schedule one with our team today! At Summerset Boat Lifts, we want you to be able to conveniently get out on the water and score some fine catches this spring season!

Check Your Boat Lift this Spring!

Boating season will be here before we know it! Our boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks knows how exciting this time of year is. We can't wait to get our boats out on the water, either. Before the official boating season gets here, make sure you schedule your spring boat lift maintenance check at the Lake of the Ozarks. Here are some things to keep an eye on, too:

Inspect Lift for Damage

If your lift has visible damage, it's important to have that repaired as soon as possible. A broken brace or support arm could cause your lift to fail and your boat to end up damaged and in the water. If you notice a broken piece on your lift, it's best to stay away from the boat as it could fall at any time and contact a boat lift maintenance company at the Lake of the Ozarks immediately.

Lubricate Moving Parts

The moving joints of your boat lift have been stationary for the past few months. With the freezing temps and mixed in warm days, the moving parts may have some extra friction. Before lowering your lift, lubricate the lift arms and joints to ensure a smooth transition through the stages of the lift can be achieved by these brackets.

Check for Clearance

The winter months mean lower lake levels. Ensure your lift has adequate clearance below your slip. Hitting the rough and rocky ground can cause damage to your lift. From jolting and knocking the bracing lose to a rock puncturing a tank, there are many potential dangers that lurk at the bottom of the lake for your boat lift. Another thing to consider is any other items that may have moved underneath the water. Ensure your lift is clear of any tree stump or other underwater obstacle that may have shifted locations throughout the winter months

Schedule Lift Maintenance

It's best to have a professional come check over your lift before you can be certain it's ready for the busy boating season ahead. Our maintenance crew can be over to your dock and inspecting your lift in no time! Contact us today to schedule your boat lift service at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Protect That New PWC!

Did you order a new PWC at the last boat show? Are you planning to buy one this spring? Our Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company is here to help you find the right PWC lift to protect your new investment. Personal watercrafts are a blast out on the water! From a quick cruise up the lake to jumping waves -- it's a thrilling ride no matter what you do on a PWC. We know how much fun your PWC can be and that's why we want to help you keep it protected and stored safely when it's not in use. We have many options available for PWC lifts at the Lake of the Ozarks. Check them out:

The flagship of our PWC line, the poly tank front-mount unit is quite capable of withstanding any water conditions. The design of the frame gives a smooth modern look and superior strength. The flotation tanks are some of the largest in the industry and this means you WILL have dry feet when you want to maintain or cover your craft, GUARANTEED.

The Double-Place Personal Water Craft lift is an extension of our popular single place design. For considerable price saving over purchasing two single’s, the double is available in several configurations. The width of the frame can be fit to most popular slip widths including 10, 11, 12 & 14’. The frame is also ideal for the discriminating boater that wants to fully deck the unit.

The PermaPort floating platform is an alternative in the PWC storage market. The PermaPort has a self-centering entry roller for easy drive-on and five additional keel rollers to make the push off effortless. A key feature is the expanded poly foam fill that gives positive floatation should the shell become compromised – other brands are simply “filled with air” and will “fill with water” when punctured… The front-mount bracket has been upgraded to be Lake of the Ozarks friendly as well.

The side-mount mechanical lift is available for the homeowner with property line issues. It’s a space-saver in that the footprint on the dock is only 5 1/2 feet instead of 11 feet.

Whether you already have a new PWC on the way or you've got your eye on one, it's time to upgrade to a new PWC lift at the Lake of the Ozarks to protect your new investment. Contact Summerset Boat Lifts today and we'll hook you up with the right lift for your unique dock and PWC situation! We look forward to hearing about your new toy, too!

Tips to Keep Your Dock Safe from Heavy Snow or Ice Damage this Winter

The first big snowstorm of the winter has hit the Lake of the Ozarks and that means it's time to ensure your dock is prepared for the winter storms and cold temps ahead. As the best boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks, we know how important it is to keep your investment safe during the off season. Docks, boats, lifts, and PWCs are all valuable investments, and protecting them during the harsh winter months should be high on your list of importance. Our boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you prepare!

Remove Heavy Snow from Dock

Large amounts of snow, especially wet snow can cause a lot of stress on your dock. Heavy enough snow can even start to submerge your dock underwater! If a heavy snowfall occurs, it's important to have a plan in place for how to get that excess weight off your dock. There are many service companies that specialize in dock snow removal. It may seem like a job for a go-getter homeowner, but it's best to leave that kind of work to the pros. Without the proper experience and equipment, it can be quite dangerous to remove snow from your dock!

Keep Ice from Forming Against the Dock

The freezing temps of winter can cause ice to form on the surface of the lake. If ice starts to form against your dock, specifically between your dock and shore, it can cause a number of issues. From tweaking your dock frame to pulling your dock away from shore, there are many potential hazards of ice forming around your dock. A Kasco De-Icer is the way to go to protect your dock, boat, and lift from ice formation damage. We're proud to carry this reliable brand of dock de-icers to help protect your property this winter!

With the current snow amounts we have, it's important to have a plan to clear the heavy snow off your dock. It's also a good idea to start preparing for the next winter storm and frigid temps that are right around the corner. Contact our boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks today to order your Kasco De-Icer to help protect your dock this winter!
