Boating Safety Tips
Holidays at the lake mean an increased amount of boat traffic on the water. With our boat safety tips, you can help to avoid the boating hazards this holiday weekend.
1. Designate a Captain: We understand that part of the holiday fun includes drinking for some people. Before departing for the day, make sure to designate a sober driver that can safely drive during your holiday celebrations. Don’t forget—the law for drinking and boating is the same as the law for drinking and driving in Missouri. The operator’s blood alcohol content should never be over .08%!
2. Bring Life Jackets: While boarding the boat before your holiday festivities, make sure you have enough life jackets for everyone on board (and ones that fit every passenger). Kids should always be wearing their life jackets while boating!
3. Don’t Speed: Increased traffic on the lake means the possibility for a boating accident increases. One way to help prevent an accident is to watch your vessel’s speed. Operating at a manageable speed decreases the risk of an accident and allows for more reaction time if something does happen.
4. Stay Alert: Unfortunately, no matter how safe you are while boating, you can’t control how safe other boats are being. Help prevent yourself from an accident by staying alert and being aware of all other vessels in the area around you.
5. Check the Weather: The lake is no stranger to storms. The forecast can change without much warning, so make sure to check the weather right before you go out on the boat. Knowledge of that day’s weather can help prevent surprise weather that may make it harder to operate on the lake.
6. Swimming and Tubing/Skiing: Summers at the lake can get hot! A popular way to cool down is to jump in the water. With the increased number of boats on the holiday weekend, it’s important to practice safe swimming and towing practices. While swimming, make sure to find a calm cove with minimum boaters where anchoring is legal. If towing a tuber or skier behind the boat, make sure to have a spotter to keep watch of the skier/tuber and an orange or red flag to display when the towed person is in the water.
