5 Fun Boat Facts You Probably Didn’t Know

As a boat owner, you probably don’t realize that you have joined a long line of people in history who enjoy sailing the open waters. Our ancestors used boats for all different reasons including hunting, fishing, migrating, trading, and much more. There are so many ways having a boat can increase the quality of your life, from the earliest times to the present day. Boats have always had a positive impact on our culture and society. So, keep reading, because Summerset Boat Lifts is breaking down 5 fun facts about boats that you probably don’t know yet!

The Oldest Boat

Boats have been around for a long time! The oldest boats ever discovered by archaeologists date back to 8000 years BCE. These “dugouts” were carved from hollowed-out tree trunks and resemble what we call canoes today. Each dugout was carefully crafted to support the weight of travelers and their belongings, while still being light enough to float in water. In addition to trees, early canoes were also built from reeds of papyrus, woven so tightly together to create a waterproof exterior. The oldest boat to have been recovered is the Pesse Canoe, which is believed to be from the early Mesolithic period.

40-Day Quarantine

Did you know the word “Quarantine” comes from the Latin word for the number 40? Well, this is because, during the bubonic plague, a ship had to wait 40 days offshore before docking at a port. Since the disease could be spread through traded goods, quarantine was imposed to make sure there was a waiting period in case anyone on the ship had symptoms. The 40-day purification period was also a nod to the biblical significance of God flooding the Earth for 40 days and nights, and Jesus fasting for 40 days because the medieval Christians referenced the Bible for every decision.

The Longest Ship

The longest ship ever constructed in history was called the Seawise Giant, measuring an impressive 1504 feet, which is longer than the Empire State Building. The Seawise Giant was built in Japan and in service from 1979 to 2009. It was sunk in 1988 during the Iran-Iraq War, but later salvaged and restored to service. The Seawise Giant was renamed Mont and took its final voyage to India in 2009, eventually to be scrapped completely by 2010.

Synchronized Sound

“Steamboat Willie” was the first ever cartoon with synchronized sound, released by Disney on November 18, 1928. This legendary short film was the debut of Mickey Mouse and featured him piloting a steamboat while whistling the “Steamboat Bill” tune. The film received worldwide acclaim for its technical innovation, spearheading the future of synchronized sound in film forever. Because of its notoriety, November 18 is celebrated as Mickey Mouse’s official birthday.

Superstitions

Sailors have always been a bit superstitious throughout history, claiming that certain bad omens can bring about unfavorable conditions on their voyages. Here is a list of the top ship superstitions:

  • Whistling on a boat brings strong winds and storms – uh, oh Mickey
  • Clapping your hands on board brings the thunder
  • Bananas ward off fish from being caught
  • Redheads and flat-footed people are unlucky
  • Women on board distract the crew, angering the sea gods
  • Saying the word “drown” will summon the event
  • Step aboard the boat with your right foot for good luck

So, remember that boating is not just a fun pastime, but has also paved the way for innovation, and contributed to shaping our culture. As the premier boat lift company at the Lake, we hope you enjoy this summer out on the water without any bad luck on board. If you do run into any trouble with your lift, remember to call Summerset for all your boat lift maintenance needs!

Stay Safe this 4th of July at the Lake of the Ozarks

Nowhere else does the Fourth of July quite like the Lake of the Ozarks! Not only do we have an ample amount of fireworks at the lake, but watching them from the water provides a front row seat to the show. However, our number one priority for boating on the fourth is safety! With Summerset Boat Lifts safety tips, you can have a fun Fourth while boating safely!

Boating Safety Tips

Holidays at the lake mean an increased amount of boat traffic on the water. With our boat safety tips, you can help to avoid the boating hazards this holiday weekend.

1. Designate a Captain: We understand that part of the holiday fun includes drinking for some people. Before departing for the day, make sure to designate a sober driver that can safely drive during your holiday celebrations. Don’t forget—the law for drinking and boating is the same as the law for drinking and driving in Missouri. The operator’s blood alcohol content should never be over .08%!

2. Bring Life Jackets: While boarding the boat before your holiday festivities, make sure you have enough life jackets for everyone on board (and ones that fit every passenger). Kids should always be wearing their life jackets while boating!

3. Don’t Speed: Increased traffic on the lake means the possibility for a boating accident increases. One way to help prevent an accident is to watch your vessel’s speed. Operating at a manageable speed decreases the risk of an accident and allows for more reaction time if something does happen.

4. Stay Alert: Unfortunately, no matter how safe you are while boating, you can’t control how safe other boats are being. Help prevent yourself from an accident by staying alert and being aware of all other vessels in the area around you.

5. Check the Weather: The lake is no stranger to storms. The forecast can change without much warning, so make sure to check the weather right before you go out on the boat. Knowledge of that day’s weather can help prevent surprise weather that may make it harder to operate on the lake.

6. Swimming and Tubing/Skiing: Summers at the lake can get hot! A popular way to cool down is to jump in the water. With the increased number of boats on the holiday weekend, it’s important to practice safe swimming and towing practices. While swimming, make sure to find a calm cove with minimum boaters where anchoring is legal. If towing a tuber or skier behind the boat, make sure to have a spotter to keep watch of the skier/tuber and an orange or red flag to display when the towed person is in the water.

Lifting Your Dreams... No Matter The Size

No matter what size, Summerset Boat Lifts can help protect your boat this coming winter. While traditionally people used to remove their boats from the lake over the winter, it's becoming more and more common (and much easier) to leave your boat up on a lift. Here at Summerset Boat Lifts, we can help prepare your lift for the long winter ahead - no matter what size boat you own! Take a look below to learn about the various boat sizes we can lift!

PWC Lifts

Our personal watercraft lifts come in 3 styles: side-mount, single front-mount and double front-mount. The side mount PWC lift is ideal for those looking to save space, as the footprint on the dock is only 5 1/2 feet instead of 11 feet. The flagship of our PWC line, the poly tank front-mount unit is quite capable of withstanding any water conditions. The single-tank by design will hold your watercraft higher out of the water than a double-tank would. The double is an extension of our popular single tank design.

4,000 & 6,000 LB Lifts

The 6,500 lb lift is an ideal capacity for almost every tritoon on the Lake of the Ozarks. the mechanism and structure of the lift are well-suited for the rough waters that our lake has to offer during the busy summer months. From a 24 foot deck boat to a 27 foot tritoon with a 300 hp outboard, this is the boat lift for your needs.

8,000 & 10,000 LB Lifts

Our 8,000 lb boat lifts are unique to the industry in that the structure has c-channel on the bottom of the tanks, which allows the weight of the boat to be distributed across many more points than the competition. The 10,000 lb lift utilizes the same structure and mechanism, giving you the opportunity to grow into a bigger boat utilizing the same lift later on.

12,000 - 17,000 LB Lifts

Our 12,000 lb lift is a heavy-duty 6-arm mechanism designed for the rough waters of the Lake of the Ozarks. Our 14,000 lb lift is our first 3-tank system and builds on the foundation of our 12,000 lb lift. The 17,000 lb lift caps off the trio of 6-arm mechanisms available. It is perfectly capable of lifting many of the 34 to 35 foot day cruisers.

20,000 LB & Bigger Lifts

Suited for many 37-41 foot day cruisers, the 20,000 lb lift is an 8-arm mechanism that features four structures that create a rigid box to dissipate the weight of the boat over many points on the lift and dock. The 24,000 lb lift is available in an 8-arm or 10-arm mechanism. The four tank system offers a superb weight to width ratio, offering great stability for your boat. Larger lifts can be custom built just for you! Your exquisite taste in big boats demands the best in boat lifts.

The wrong size boat lift can be detrimental to your vessel. If your lift isn't able to properly lift your boat out of the water it may break and allow your boat to sink down into the water. Protect your boat and lift your dreams with our Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company! If you are unsure your lift is the right size for your boat, give us a call today. We look forward to lifting your dreams!

It's Time to De-Winterize

Spring is just a few weeks away and you'll be wanting to hit the water before you know it! Before you head out for a day on the Lake, you need to make sure your boat is in proper working order. After sitting all winter, some things should be inspected before you get your boat up and running. Summerset Boat Lifts has gathered a few tips for de-winterizing your boat and getting it ready for spring:

1. Inspect the Engine.

If you didn't change the engine oil at the end of the season, you'll want to do that now. Change the oil filter while you're at it as well. Adding the right oil additive can keep your engine clean and corrosion free. Be sure to check the out-drive oil too, making sure it's clean and ready for you to start the engine.

2. Test the Battery.

If you have water in your battery, be sure it stays full of water; if and when it dries out, it's no longer good. Use a battery tester to check out the amps and volts. If the battery is incapable of holding a charge, then you may need to purchase a replacement battery.  If it is holding charge, attach the cables after cleaning any corrosion from the battery terminals.

3. Fill Up the Cooling System.

You should have drained the cooling system before winter to avoid freezing lines. Be sure to examine the hoses for any cracks and empty out the strainer. If you have an outboard engine that uses an impeller cooling system, make sure that the rubber impeller is not cracked. If all looks good, fill everything back up so you're ready to go!

4. Examine the Gas Tank.

You should have filled the tank up completely at the end of the season to ensure moisture didn't have a chance to form in there. You'll still want to make sure that the fuel filter has been changed and be sure to inspect the fuel lines for cracks. It's not uncommon for the cooler winter temperatures to cause the lines to crack. If you did not use an additive in your gas to prevent water contamination and/or fuel separation, drain the gas from the fuel tank, as it is probably stale.

5. Clean the Distributor.

The distributor can become corroded during the winter months. To clean out the distributor, you'll need to take its cap off. Once you've checked it out, be sure the connections are tightly hooked back up.

6. Check the Boat's Belts.

If any of the belts seem too loose, they need to be changed as that is a sign they are worn. To test if it's worn, try pushing down on it. While it should push down slightly, any significant movement is not good. The alternator belt can wear out faster than the others so pay special attention to it. You can also look for black soot near the pulley, as that is another sign the belts are worn.

Be sure to check your owner's manual to see if there are any other steps specific to your boat that need to be taken during the de-winterization process. However, before you start your de-winterizing process, it's important to have spring maintenance done on your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift. Call the best boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks at 573-348-5037 to come out and take a look before you head out on the water for the first time this season!

Boat Lift Maintenance Tips to Perform Before Winter Hits

Temperatures are cooling and winter will be here before you know it. After a long season of running your boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks, it could probably use some maintenance. Before you winterize you're boat and leave your lift untouched for the winter months, make sure everything is in proper working condition - that way, when spring rolls around, you're boat lift is ready for use!

Boat Lift Maintenance Tips

  • Raise your boat lift out of the water and rinse it. Leaving it submerged for prolonged periods of time accelerates deterioration. Make sure you get all that dirt and grime rinsed off before it sits all winter long.
  • Visually inspect all moving parts, bushings, hoses and hose clamps for any loose items, punctures or anything else that is out of place.
  • Make sure all nuts, bolts and hose clamps are properly tightened.
  • Remove the motor cover and clean out any debris that may have gotten in there over the course of the summer.
  • Visually inspect the motor and bearings for any damage or part wear.
  • Check the carpet bunks for any worn areas or tears. Make repairs or replace spots as necessary.
  • Inspect the condition of the bunks and replace them if any are cracked or split.

Bonus Tip

  • It is recommended that you operate your lift occasionally throughout the winter months. This keeps the motor contacts and brushes clean, plus keeps everything evenly lubricated through extended periods of no boating activity. By simply running your lift for about 1 minute in each direction, you can reduce the chances of having issues when you go to actually use it next spring!

If you notice anything out of the ordinary with your boat lift, give Summerset Boat Lifts a call at 573-348-5073. We pride ourselves in service and that's what sets apart! For all of your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift repair and maintenance needs, we're here to make certain you and your boat get the very best level of service at the Lake. We are Summerset Boat Lifts and we are Lifting Your Dreams... From Canoes to Cruisers!

9 Tips for Winterizing Your Boat

It's October and boating season is winding down. Now is the time to start thinking about winterizing your boat. Spending some time and effort now on your boat will keep it in tip top shape, saving you time, effort and money when spring rolls around. Here are a few tips for winterizing your boat from your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer.

Winterizing Your Boat

The first step in winterizing your boat should be to make a list of all the tasks to be accomplished. You want to make sure you don't leave anything out. Be sure to check your owner's manual for their recommendations on what needs to be done to winterize your specific boat. Below is a list of general tips that everyone should follow when winterizing their boat.

General Boat Winterizing Tips

1. Inboard Engines - You'll want to change the oil before storing your boat for the winter. To change the oil, heat up the oil first by running the engine for awhile. The warm oil allows for impurities to drain away. While you're changing the oil filter, you'll also want to flush it out with fresh water. Then be sure to re-fill the oil to proper levels and check for any leaks. Then flush the engine with non-toxic antifreeze by using an intake hose to the water pump. Start the engine and allow the antifreeze to circulate. In addition, you should change the transmission fluid, as well as remove the spark plugs and spray each cylinder with fogging oil.

2. Outboard Engines - Flush the engine with fresh water using flush muffs or the flushing port usually on the back of the engine. Then start the engine, and while it's running with the cowl removed, spray fogging solution into the air intakes on the front of the engine. Then remove the fuel line from the engine and continue spraying fogging solution until the engine dies. This step is important because you don't want any fuel in the carburetors. By removing the fuel, you'll prevent build-up of deposits from evaporated fuel. Finally you'll want to apply water resistant grease to the propeller shaft and threads, change the gear oil in the lower unit and lightly lubricate the exterior of the engine or polish with a good wax.

3. Stern Drives - Thoroughly inspect the stern drive to remove any plant life or other debris. Drain the gear case and check for moisture in the oil. Moisture could indicate leaking seals that would need to be repair before boat use in the spring. Clean the lower unit with soap and water. If your stern has rubber boots, check for cracks or pinholes. Finally grease all fittings and check fluid levels in hydraulic steering or lift pumps.

4. Bilges - Use hot water, soap and a stiff brush to clean up any oil spills. Once the bilges are clean, spray them with a moisture displacing lubricant and add a little antifreeze to keep any water from freezing.

5. Fuel - If there is any fuel remaining in the tank, you'll want to treat it with fuel stabilizer. Some manufacturers even recommend refilling your tank to reduce space for condensation to form. Be sure to change the fuel filters and water separators.

6. Fresh Water System - You'll want to completely drain the fresh water tank and hot water heater. Isolate the hot water by disconnecting the in and out lines to then connect them together. Pump a non-toxic antifreeze into the system and run all faucets until the antifreeze is coming out. You'll also want to put some non-toxic antifreeze into the water heater.

7. Head - Pump out the holding tank at an approved facility. While pumping, add fresh water to the bowl and flush it several times. Use the recommended solution in your owners manual to let sit for a few minutes before flushing with fresh water again. Pump non-toxic antifreeze through hoses, holding tank, y-valve, macerator and discharge hose. Check your owners manual to make sure the type of antifreeze being used won't damage your system.

8. Interior - Once you've taken care of everything to do with the system, remove any valuables, electronics, lines, PFD, fire extinguishers, flares, fenders, etc. to be cleaned and checked over the winter, and then replaced if needed. Open all doors and lockers to make sure everything is thoroughly cleaned before you lock it up for the winter. Turn any cushions up on edge to help air circulate around them or better yet bring them home with you to keep them in the best shape possible. Open and clean the refrigerator and freezer. To keep your boat dry and mildew-free throughout the winter, you might want to install a dehumidifier or use some of the commercially available odor and moisture absorbing products.

9. Batteries - Disconnect the battery cables and remove the battery from the boat. Clean the battery and terminal ends with a water and baking soda solution. Be sure to rinse thoroughly with clean water. Apply a light coat of grease on the terminal end of the battery and cables. Store the battery in a cool, dry place with a trickle charger to keep it charged through the winter to it's ready to go in the spring.
