About the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout

The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is the largest unsanctioned boat race in the Midwest, with over 100 racers and 100,000 spectators! According to Powerboat Magazine, it's one of the nation's eight "must-see" boating events. The event will bring the top racers and offshore racing powerboats up to 244 MPH. The "Top Gun" in 2017 went to team American Ethanol with a stunning 204 mph on the new 3/4 mile Captain Ron's course! All the proceeds from the event will benefit the Lake Area Rescue Teams and other charitable organizations in the Lake area. Last year $200,000 was given to 28 different charities and 8 fire departments.

7 Essentials for a Day on the Lake

We've reached the peak of boating season at the Lake of the Ozarks! The weather is warm and there's no better way to spend your summer vacation than out on the water. Today's blog from Summerset Boat Lifts offers a list of essentials you'll want to bring with you before hitting the water for the day.

1. Sunscreen.

The #1 item you don't want to forget when you're preparing for a day on the water is sunscreen! Even if your boat has an awning, you'll want to make sure you protect your skin from the suns rays. While some people are lucky enough to just tan, it doesn't take much for the rest of us to burn. Either way, everyone should use sunscreen, and be sure to re-apply it throughout the day. Don't forget your lips can burn too, so bring some chap-stick with SPF in it too.

2. Bottled Water.

The 2nd most important item to bring on the boat, which might actually be tied with number 1, is bottled water. It's extremely easy to become dehydrated while out in the sun all day on a boat. Make sure you bring enough bottled water for everyone on the boat to stay well hydrated throughout the day. If you're drinking alcohol on the boat, your chances of becoming de-hydrated are even higher, so be sure those people get plenty of water as well.

3. Sunglasses and a Hat.

In addition to sunscreen, you'll want some sunglasses to protect your eyes from the suns harmful rays. The summer sun at the Lake of the Ozarks is bright, especially when it's gleaming off the water. You'll get tired of squinting all day long, so grab a pair of sunglasses and maybe even a hat. A big floppy hat for the ladies not only looks cute, but also protects your eyes, face and sometimes even your shoulders from the sun.

4. Snacks.

Depending on how long you're planning to stay out on the water, you might want to bring some snacks. Even if you're planning to stop at one of the local waterfront restaurants for lunch or dinner, boating works up an appetite. Having some snacks on board can hold you over until you reach your stop. Fruit, chips and nuts are all easy snacks to bring for a fun day on the water. You might even consider packing some sandwiches if you don't want to spend money stopping for food.

5. Beach Towel.

What's better than boating all day? Jumping off the boat into the cool lake water or riding on an inflatable behind the boat! Once you get back on the boat though, you'll want to have a towel to dry off. When you get going fast, the wind against your wet skin can be quite chilly. Beach towels will come in handy to not only dry yourself off, but to also dry the seat or other items on board that might accidentally become wet.

6. Extra Clothes and a Jacket.

If you're planning on staying on the water until the evening hours, you might consider bringing a dry change of clothes and a jacket. It can get pretty chilly on the water at night after the sun has gone down. You don't want to be wet and freezing the entire ride home. If you have children, you might consider bringing a blanket for them to cuddle up with for the cool ride back. Grab a beach bag to throw everything in to keep it together and dry!

7. Cell Phone and Charger.

In case of inclement weather, getting lost or some other type of emergency, you'll want to have a cellphone on board to call for help. Be sure you know how to reach the water patrol or coast guard if needed. The phone can also come in handy to blast your favorite music or keep the kids entertained if they get tired of being out in the hot sun. Be sure to bring a charger as well in case it runs out of juice.

Are we missing something on our list? Leave us a note about your essentials in the comments!

3 Common Reasons for Boat Lift Repairs

Just like your boat, your boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks requires some regular maintenance to keep them in proper working conditions. When that doesn't happen, bigger issues can arise. Below we discuss some of the common boat lift issues that call for repairs. All lifts, no matter the type, are susceptible to some common problems.

1. Electrical or Hydraulic Issues.

Many boat lifts work on hydraulics to raise and lower the lift. Hydraulic problems can related to a loose connection or a hydraulic fluid leak. If you suspect that the hydraulics are causing issues, you should consider contacting a boat lift professional at the Lake of the Ozarks. Continual use of a failing hydraulic system could result in excessive damage to the lift. It may be necessary to remove  the hydraulic component and install a new one. Also, like with any piece of equipment that runs on electricity, electrical problems are possible, especially when you're working around water.

2. Rust Build Up.

If your boat lift loses its protective coating of paint over the metal, it can start to rust. While aluminum will resist rust, steel is also a popular material for boat lifts and will rust over time. The options for repairing rust will depend on the severity of the problem. If rust is found early on, it can often be ground off the metal. Then you can cover it with a protective sealant and paint it to prevent rust from occurring again. However, if you have an older boat lift and the rust has been there for awhile, it may be affecting the structural integrity of the metal in the lift. In that case it would be better to cut out the rusted section and weld on a new piece of metal.

3. Structural Issues.

From debris in the water to an actual boat, many things can strike your boat lift and cause structural damage. Small dents and dings are bound to happen, but any structure damage that interferes with how the lift operates should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your lift or even your boat. Depending on the severity of the damage, it may be more cost effective to purchase a new lift from the best boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks. We have a great selection of both new and used boat lifts.

For all your boat lift needs, trust Summerset Boat Lifts! Our sales of new and used boat lifts are complimented by the servicing of many different brands of lifts. If you have a need for boat lift repairs at the Lake of the Ozarks, give us a call at 573-348-5073.

Knowing When Your Boat Dock Needs Replaced

In order for your lift to work properly and protect your boat, your dock needs to be in good shape. The Lake of the Ozarks boat lift has to be able to attach to your dock. Keep reading to learn about some signs that suggest your boat dock needs repaired or replaced.

1. Warped or Cracked Dock Supports.

Depending on the type of material that was used to build your dock, currents and waves can cause the structure to bend, warp or crack. In addition, ramming your boat into the dock while trying to dock it can also cause these issues. If the cracks are minor, you can likely just replace individual boards or beams. However, if load bearing areas are damaged, you'll want to have your dock replaced. This will ensure structural integrity. Your lift isn't going to be able to protect your boat from sinking if the entire dock falls apart.

2. Rusted Platforms and Dock Supports.

If you have a metal dock, you'll need to watch for rust. Due to the dock being in constant contact with water, there's bound to be a build-up of moisture, which can lead to rusted platforms and dock supports. If rust has overtaken the dock, you're likely way overdue for a dock replacement. If only small amounts of rust are found, you can try replacing those individual parts or pieces. If you're replacing your metal dock, you might consider investing in a dock of a higher quality material.

3. Wood Rot Spread Out On Dock.

While it's normal for your dock to experience a little rot over time, if the wood rot is not contained to a small area, it's probably time to replace your dock. Sometimes fungus from the lake water can cause dry rot, which causes wooden components of the dock to decay and crumble. This is normal wear and tear that all docks will experience. When there's only a small area of wood rot, you can likely just replace a board or two and your dock will be fine. However, if the rot has spread across the dock simultaneously, repairs can become expensive and replacing the dock might be a better option.

Not only do you want to keep any eye on your dock for necessary repairs, but it's also a good idea to regularly inspect your boat lift. If any maintenance or repairs are needed on your lift, you can trust Summerset Boat Lifts, your premier boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks, to get the job done right. Protect Your Dock During Winter Drawdown

While we haven't seen much snow or ice yet here in mid-Missouri, winter has arrived. The temperatures are dropping and the water levels in the Lake of the Ozarks are dropping. The annual winter drawdown is something that waterfront property owners need to pay special attention to, as their docks can be affected by the change in water depth.

Winter Drawdown

At the Lake of the Ozarks, lake and river fluctuations occur for several reasons. In order to prepare for the winter flood season, the levels of the lake are lowered. This makes room in the lake for possible runoff produced by winter storms or melting snow and ice. Also, during the winter months, there is a higher demand for electricity; therefore, water levels will change when Bagnell Dam releases water to meet this need for electricity.

Lake of the Ozarks Docks

While the winter drawdown is necessary to prevent flooding and provide electricity, it can cause issues for dock owners at the Lake of the Ozarks. Now is the time to prepare your docks for the lower lake levels that are to come in the coming months. Here are a few things you, as a dock owner, can do to avoid damage to your dock this winter:

  1. Check to make sure your dock isn't pinned or hampered by any stumps or other objects that would prevent it from moving up and down with the fluctuations in water levels.
  2. Inspect all dock cables and bolts for any loose or rusting parts.
  3. Be sure to drain all water lines.
  4. Raise your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift to ensure that it is holding air as it should.
  5. Lengthen your dock cables to allow the docks to drop.
  6. Make sure that you have a deicer to keep the water around your dock from freezing and causing major damage.

Don't let the water level fluctuations damage your dock - get prepared now. For all your winter boat lift needs, contact Summerset Boat Lifts at 573-348-5073. We have deicers available that can protect your dock and boat lift throughout the winter months, ensuring that you're ready to hit the Lake come springtime.
