Staying Safe on the Water

With the increased traffic on the water over the holiday, it's important that take actions to stay safe. Here's some tips to keep you safe and prevent problems on the water this holiday weekend/week.

1. Designate a Captain - We know you want to have fun for the holidays, but make sure you have a sober captain to get you home safely after a day of celebrating on the water. Just like with cars, drinking and driving a boat don't mix.

2. Bring Life Jackets - Make sure you have enough life jackets on board for everyone. The chance of a boating accident increases on busy holiday weekends, so make sure life jackets are accessible to all passengers. Children should be wearing them at all times while on a watercraft.

3. Don't Speed - While it may seem like common sense, don't speed. This is particularly important with an abundance of boats on the water; it can be harder for someone to get out of your way or for you to make a quick turn. Operating at a safe speed will help you avoid a boating accident.

4. Stay Alert - While you may be doing everything you can to stay safe while boating, others may not be. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings. There can be a lot of distractions on a boat, maybe even more so than in a car, so make sure your captain stays alert.

Summerset Boat Lifts wishes you a Happy 4th of July holiday this year! We want you to be safe not just on the water, but also on your dock. Caring for Your Boat Lift at the Lake of the Ozarks

In order for your boat lift to take care of your boat, you have to take care of your boat lift. Just like with a car, you'll want to perform preventative maintenance tasks regularly to keep your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift in tip-top shape. A little maintenance can go a long way in preventing emergency calls, such as dealing with a sinking boat. Make your time on the water more enjoyable by not having to worry about your lift.

Boat Lift Maintenance Tips

Follow these boat lift maintenance tips to ensure your boat lift is always in proper working condition:
  • Start with a complete visual inspection of all moving parts, bushings, hoses and hose clamps. If you see something that doesn't quite look right, give Summerset Boat Lifts a call to come check it out.
  • Check all nuts, bolts and hose clamps with a wrench for tightness.
  • Check all cables and hoses for any broken strands, punctures, etc.
  • Grease the gears several times per year. It's recommended that you grease them after every 15-20 uses.
  • Due to normal wear and tear, the drive belt can become loose, so be sure to tighten it regularly.
  • Remove the motor cover and clean out any debris that may have gotten in there. It's also a good idea to inspect the motor for any visual damage or part wear.
  • Spray all motor parts with a corrosion preventative lubricant semi-annually.
  • Check carpeted bunks for worn areas and tears, repair or replace them as necessary.
  • Inspect the condition of wood bunks and replace them if any are cracked or split.
  • Whenever possible, raise your lift out of the water and give it a good rinse. Leaving it submerged for prolonged periods of time can reduce its life. Rinsing it regularly will keep your boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks looking and functioning like new!
  • During the off-season or during extended periods of no boating activity, it's recommended to operate your lift occasionally to keep the motor contacts and brushes clean, and keep everything evenly lubricated.

4 Common Heat-Related Illnesses to Avoid This Summer

It's summertime, and that means extremely hot temperatures. While it's fun to be out on the water during hot summer days, it's important that we take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Today's blog from the best boat lift dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks discusses some common heat-related illnesses and how to avoid them.

1. Dehydration.

The most common heat-related illness is dehydration, and it's very easy to get it on a hot summer day. Dehydration is a harmful reduction in the amount of water in the body. When it's hot out, your body uses more water, and therefore, you have to replenish it to avoid becoming dehydrated. Whether you're spending hours out boating, swimming or hiking, it's important that you make sure to drink enough water. Drinking alcohol also increases your risk of dehydration.

2. Sunburn.

Another extremely common heat-related illness, or rather sun-related illness, is sunburn. A sunburn is a form of radiation burn that affects living tissue, such as skin, that results from an overexposure to the ultraviolet rays (sunshine). Often times you don't even realize you've gotten a sunburn until the next morning. When you're out in the sun, especially when on the water, you want to be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen. Consider wearing a hat, and avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

3. Heat Exhaustion.

Heat exhaustion is identifiable by heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, cool, moist skin with goose bumps, muscle cramps, nausea and headache. Heat exhaustion is most common when someone is working or exercising without drinking enough liquids. Exerting yourself during watersports on the Lake could cause heat exhaustion if you're not drinking enough water. Swimming while dehydrated can also lead to heat exhaustion. Some ways to prevent heat exhaustion include wearing light-weight, light-colored clothing, drinking plenty of liquids, avoiding vigorous activity and avoiding a sunburn. Both sunburn and dehydration can increase your chances of getting heat exhaustion.

4. Heat Stroke.

Heat Stroke is a more serious condition where the body fails to regulate its own body temperature and your body temperatures continues to rise. This is a medical emergency and even with immediate treatment, can be life-threatening or cause serious long-term problems. This illness is often a progression of one of the other heat-related illnesses listed above. If you experience any of the symptoms of heat exhaustion, take immediate action to cool your body down. It's important that you address the situation before it escalates to heat stroke.

Do I Need a PWC Lift?

Do you need a lift of your personal watercraft? The answer is YES, of course! Just like with a boat, your personal watercraft is an investment that you want to protect. By purchasing a PWC lift at the Lake of the Ozarks, you don't have to pull your jetskis or seadoos out of the water after each use. You can store them at your dock, so they are ready to hit the water whenever you are! Keep reading to learn about the PWC lifts that we have to offer here at Summerset Boat Lifts.

Importance of a Watercraft Lift

No matter the size of your boat, a lift is crucial for keeping it in tip-top shape. Leaving your watercraft in the water for extended periods of time can cause blistering and other damage to your watercraft. The waters at the Lake of the Ozarks can be quite rough during the summer, even if you're just docking your PWC to run in for a quick lunch, it can easily get banged up from hitting against your dock. In addition to preventing corrosion and damage, a lift will save you time and resources taking your watercraft in and out of the water all the time.

Our PWC Lifts

At Summerset Boat Lifts, we offer a variety of PWC lifts to meet your needs. For a single PWC, we offer a sidemount and a front-mount option. We also offer a double place style for those with more than one PWC that needs lifted.

Sidemount PWC Lift
The Galva-Hoist sidemount mechanical lift is available for the homeowner with property line issues. It's a space-saver in the fact that the footprint on the dock is only 5 1/2 feet instead of 11 feet. The capacity for this PWC lift is 920 lbs.

Single Place PWC Lift
The flagship of our PWC line, the poly tank front-mount unit is quite capable of withstanding any water conditions. The single-tank, by design, will hold your machine higher out of the water than a two-tank system would. This means you WILL have dry feet when you want to maintain or cover your watercraft, GUARANTEED!

Double Place PWC Lift
Cruising around the Lake is always more fun with a friend! If you have more than one PWC to lift, this is the way to go! The double-place personal watercraft lift is an extension of the ever popular single tank design. For considerable price savings over purchasing two singles, the double is the perfect solution. The double is also available with a full deck.

Whether you're in need of one of our personal watercraft lifts or a bigger lift, there's no better place to go than Summerset Boat Lifts! We are proud to offer the Galva-Hoist product line of floating boat lifts! They're engineered to withstand the rough waters that the Lake of the Ozarks experienced each year. No matter what brand of boat or dock you have, the Galva-Hoist boat lifts provide great value and performance. Our new lift sales are complimented by pre-owned sales to fit your budget. Pontoon Lifts at the Lake of the Ozarks

Among the boats you see on the Lake of the Ozarks is the pontoon. In fact, pontoons and tri-toons are one of the most popular types of boats for our lake, as they're great for enjoying a family day out on the water. Keep reading to learn more about pontoons and tri-toons, as well as how to protect your investment with a pontoon lift from the best boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks.

About Pontoon Boats

What makes a pontoon boat a pontoon? Generally speaking, a boat with a large, flat deck that's mounted atop two or more metal tubes, called "pontoons," is a pontoon boat. Boats with three of these metal "pontoons" are sometimes called "tri-toons." The "pontoons," or tubes, contain a lot of reserve buoyancy and allow designers to create massive deck plans fitted with all sorts of accommodations to make enjoying a day on the water even more spectacular. This can include expansive lounge areas, stand-up bars and sun pads. The tubes are almost always made out of welded sheets of marine-grade aluminum. While these tubes are obviously designed to go in the water, you want to protect that aluminum from things in the water by lifting it up out of the water when it's not in use.

Lifting Your Pontoon Boat

Lift your aluminum pontoon or tri-toon to ensure great performance! At Summerset Boat Lifts, we are proud to offer the Galva-Hoist line of floating boat lifts. These lifts are engineered at the Lake of the Ozarks, and are made to withstand the roughest waters our lake experiences throughout the summer. Our 6,500 lb lift is ideal for almost every pontoon and tri-toon on the Lake of the Ozarks. The mechanism and structure of the lift are well suited for the rough waters our lake has to offer during the summer boating season. From a 24 foot deck boat to a 27 foot tri-toon with a 300 hp outboard, give serious consideration to our 6,500 lb boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks!

National Safe Boating Week is May 19-25

Sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council, National Safe Boating Week promotes boating and life jacket safety to boaters everywhere. The council believes that wearing a life jacket is the simplest way to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones while enjoying a day on the water. National Safe Boating Week, May 19-25, helps kick off the season long campaign to promote safety while boating. Learn more about the national safe boating campaign "Wear It" below.

The National Safe Boating Campaign

The National Safe Boating Campaign is a worldwide effort focused on responsible boating, encouraging boaters to always wear a life jacket while on the water. While it's tempting to not wear a life jacket while on the water, accidents happen in an instant. Boating safety advocates recommend that all boaters and passengers not only have a life jacket, but wear it at all times while boating. Make it a habit and always wear a life jacket.

Life Jacket Fit and Care

Life jackets are available for every boating activity! Modern life jackets are much more comfortable, lightweight and stylish than the bulky orange style most boaters know. Find out which style is best for your boating activity with this quiz: http://www.safeboatingcampaign.com/quiz/.

Make Sure It Fits

Not only is it important to wear a life jacket when boating, but you want to make sure it fits properly. You don't want your life jacket too large or too small; it should fit snug. Life jackets for adults do not work children. A few things to remember about life jackets:
  1. Make sure it is properly fastened and that all straps, buckles or zippers are secure.
  2. Hold your arms straight up over your head. Then ask a friend to grasp the tops of the arm openings and gently pull up. Ensure that it is not coming off!

Life Jacket Care

Caring for your life jacket is also important. Follow these tips below:
  • Use your life jacket properly.
  • Ensure there's no rips, waterlogging or mildew on your life jacket.
  • Be sure to thoroughly dry your life jacket after use.
  • Hand wash your life jacket in mild detergent.
  • Store your life jacket in a dry place when you're not boating.
Refer to your life jacket's owner's manual for specific maintenance requirements.

Recreational Boating Statistics

The figures below are from the U.S. Coast Guard's 2016 Recreational Boating Statistics. This is the latest record of reported boating accidents in the U.S.

  • 80% of boating deaths are due to drowning
  • 83% of victims were NOT wearing a life jacket
  • 2/3 of drowning victims are good swimmers
  • 4,463 reported accidents in 2016 (a 7.3% increase from 2015)
  • 701 reported deaths in 2016 (a 12% increase from 2015)
  • 2,903 reported injuries in 2016 (an 11.1% increase from 2015)
  • $49 million dollars in approximate damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents
  • 77% of deaths occurred on boats where the operator had no boating safety instruction
  • 15% of deaths where the primary cause was known as alcohol as the leading factor
  • 1 in 3 of all boating injuries occurred in boat operators over the age of 35
Wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is the simplest life-saving strategy for recreational boaters.
