5 Fun Boat Facts You Probably Didn’t Know

As a boat owner, you probably don’t realize that you have joined a long line of people in history who enjoy sailing the open waters. Our ancestors used boats for all different reasons including hunting, fishing, migrating, trading, and much more. There are so many ways having a boat can increase the quality of your life, from the earliest times to the present day. Boats have always had a positive impact on our culture and society. So, keep reading, because Summerset Boat Lifts is breaking down 5 fun facts about boats that you probably don’t know yet!

The Oldest Boat

Boats have been around for a long time! The oldest boats ever discovered by archaeologists date back to 8000 years BCE. These “dugouts” were carved from hollowed-out tree trunks and resemble what we call canoes today. Each dugout was carefully crafted to support the weight of travelers and their belongings, while still being light enough to float in water. In addition to trees, early canoes were also built from reeds of papyrus, woven so tightly together to create a waterproof exterior. The oldest boat to have been recovered is the Pesse Canoe, which is believed to be from the early Mesolithic period.

40-Day Quarantine

Did you know the word “Quarantine” comes from the Latin word for the number 40? Well, this is because, during the bubonic plague, a ship had to wait 40 days offshore before docking at a port. Since the disease could be spread through traded goods, quarantine was imposed to make sure there was a waiting period in case anyone on the ship had symptoms. The 40-day purification period was also a nod to the biblical significance of God flooding the Earth for 40 days and nights, and Jesus fasting for 40 days because the medieval Christians referenced the Bible for every decision.

The Longest Ship

The longest ship ever constructed in history was called the Seawise Giant, measuring an impressive 1504 feet, which is longer than the Empire State Building. The Seawise Giant was built in Japan and in service from 1979 to 2009. It was sunk in 1988 during the Iran-Iraq War, but later salvaged and restored to service. The Seawise Giant was renamed Mont and took its final voyage to India in 2009, eventually to be scrapped completely by 2010.

Synchronized Sound

“Steamboat Willie” was the first ever cartoon with synchronized sound, released by Disney on November 18, 1928. This legendary short film was the debut of Mickey Mouse and featured him piloting a steamboat while whistling the “Steamboat Bill” tune. The film received worldwide acclaim for its technical innovation, spearheading the future of synchronized sound in film forever. Because of its notoriety, November 18 is celebrated as Mickey Mouse’s official birthday.

Superstitions

Sailors have always been a bit superstitious throughout history, claiming that certain bad omens can bring about unfavorable conditions on their voyages. Here is a list of the top ship superstitions:

  • Whistling on a boat brings strong winds and storms – uh, oh Mickey
  • Clapping your hands on board brings the thunder
  • Bananas ward off fish from being caught
  • Redheads and flat-footed people are unlucky
  • Women on board distract the crew, angering the sea gods
  • Saying the word “drown” will summon the event
  • Step aboard the boat with your right foot for good luck

So, remember that boating is not just a fun pastime, but has also paved the way for innovation, and contributed to shaping our culture. As the premier boat lift company at the Lake, we hope you enjoy this summer out on the water without any bad luck on board. If you do run into any trouble with your lift, remember to call Summerset for all your boat lift maintenance needs!

Stay Safe on Your Boat during the Heat Wave

The heat wave is bringing extreme temperatures to Lake of the Ozarks this week, with back-to-back days over 100 degrees. If you are boating at the Lake of the Ozarks, you will likely be exposed to intense sunlight, increasing your chances of a heat-related illness. Be prepared for the heat wave and stay safe this weekend by following these tips from Summerset Boat Lifts!

Stay Hydrated

The most important thing you can do for your body is to stay hydrated with fresh water. When your body gets hot, it starts to sweat and become dehydrated quickly. Drinking alcohol doesn’t help either. Before you step on the boat, make sure you pack enough water for everyone in your party to drink for the duration of your outing. The Lake also has many stops you can jump off at to pick up drinks if you forget or run out. Staying hydrated will keep you feeling your best and reduce your chances of heat exhaustion.

Wear Sunscreen

Too much exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun not only dehydrates you but also damages your skin and increases your chances of skin cancer. It is incredibly important to wear sunscreen when you are outside for any amount of time to avoid the harmful effects of UV rays. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 minimum and remember to reapply every two hours or after swimming.

Wear Sunglasses

Your eyes can also suffer damage from too much ultraviolet exposure, especially combined with the reflections you see on the water. Grab a pair of polarized sunglasses which will reduce the glare cast by reflections and protect your eyes from the dangerous effects of too much UV light.

Wear UV Protective Clothing

Its best to wear clothes that are tight-woven like denim, canvas, wool, or synthetic fibers, as they block out more UV rays than sheer clothing. You can check the safety of your clothing by holding it up to a light. If you can see through it, then UV rays can likely get through the fabric and damage your skin. You can find clothing designed with sun protection in mind at outdoor recreation stores. This clothing will have an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating on its tag which determines the level of UV exposure.

Find Shade

Most boats have either a dodger, Bimini, or boom awning to cover and provide shade to the cabin area. If you feel you’ve had too much sun exposure, try to avoid more by sitting in the shade. There is also the option of pulling off into a cove and finding a shaded area to anchor your boat for a break.

Avoid the Hottest Time of the Day

The hottest time of the day at Lake of the Ozarks is usually between 2:00pm and 6:00pm. Try to avoid going out during this time by taking an earlier trip or stopping for dinner and drinks at one of the many lakefront restaurants. The temperature starts to cool down around 7:00pm.

Look for Signs of Heat Illness

Untreated dehydration and excessive UV exposure can lead to heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. The symptoms of these conditions begin with thirst, dizziness, sweating, and nausea. They can develop and eventually lead to unconsciousness and possible death. If anyone is exhibiting these symptoms while you’re out on the lake, there are a couple of things you should do. Give them cold water, move them to a cooler spot, loosen any tight clothing, and call 911. Following the steps mentioned above will help eliminate the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke but knowing the signs to look for is just as important.

You can still have fun boating at the Lake of the Ozarks this weekend if you take the proper steps to ensure your safety on the water. Before you even get to the boat, make sure you have an adequate supply of water packed, preferably in a cooler with ice. Wear proper clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from ultraviolet rays. Try leaving earlier in the morning to avoid the hottest temperatures in the afternoon. Our boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks also recommends finding shade when you need it and making sure you are keeping an eye for any signs of a heat-related illness. By taking these measures, you are sure to have a great day at the Lake of the Ozarks that’s not only fun but also safe!

5 Ways to Make Your Dock a Safer Place

If you own a waterfront home at the Lake of the Ozarks, there’s a good chance you have a dock on your property. Our boat lift company at the Lake of the Ozarks knows how important it is to keep you and your guests safe on and around your dock this summer. Check out a few of our dock safety tips for a safe and fun summer ahead!

1. Avoid Leaning Over the Edge

Avoid leaning over the edge of your dock. We understand this can be tricky if you are working on something on your dock or if you're cleaning your boat. If you need to lean over the water while on the dock, have another person on your dock for safety reasons. If you happen to go over the edge, this other helper will be able to assist you in getting safely out of the water.

2. Keep Tabs on Everyone on the Dock

Keep tabs on all of your guests as they are on your dock and/or swimming around it. Have a buddy system in place where each person has another person they are to keep tabs on. This ensures every person is safe while having a great time at your dock!

3. Ensure Swimmers Have Floatation Devices

Encourage all swimmers to have some sort of floatation device handy, especially if there is alcohol involved in your lake day. Even strong swimmers can quickly become fatigued out in the summer sun all day. Whether it's a noodle, a floaty, or a life jacket, ensure all of the swimmers near your dock have a way to stay afloat in hand.

4. Encourage Swimmers to Stay a Safe Distance from Dock

Docks can be dangerous to be next to, especially if the water is rough in your location. A large wave can push you against the dock, or even worse, under it. Make sure you're swimming a safe distance away from your dock at all times. Encourage anyone who is jumping in the water to jump away from the dock, and not straight down, as well.

5. Get Dock Inspected Annually

Your dock should be inspected each year to ensure it's up to the latest safety protocol. Electrical safety is a big deal. Electricity and water don't mix. It's important that the electricity to your dock is inspected each year to ensure it's properly grounded to avoid a dangerous situation for you and your family.

We’re well into boating season and it’s a great idea to recap these dock safety tips to help ensure you and your guests have an amazing experience on the dock this summer! As you spend more time on your dock during the summer months, you may see some potential for some upgrades to the space. From WetStep dock accessories to adding a walkway to your lift, there are many ways Summerset Boat Lifts can complete your dock and make it a safer place for everyone!

3 Sure Ways to Make Boating with Your Pup More Enjoyable

We know that you love your pup more than anything. Want another way to spend time with them this summer? Bring them with you boating on Lake of the Ozarks this summer! Dogs’ worlds revolve around their owner. Boating with them is another opportune bonding moment.

At Summerset Boat Lifts, we understand you want to enjoy your boat in as many ways as possible (especially with your pup.) Quality over quantity, right? Here are some ways you can now start enjoying the boat with your doggo aboard for a long time to come.

1. Bring extra water aboard for you AND the pup (so they don’t drink the lake water)

Heat waves are coming in hot this summer! Yes, we are going to remind you of the cliché to stay hydrated.

Stay hydrated!

Both pupper and you need to have water handy while sailing all day long. Not only are we trying to avoid heat stroke this summer, but also, this refrains your dog from drinking the lake water and ultimately, causing illness.

Plus, let’s be realistic… Water helps maintain yours and pup’s energy all day long. Long lake days are the best ones!

2. Take safety precautions

We are sure your definition of fun doesn’t include doggo disasters, so we think it’s important to consider pet safety as a top priority. There are a few things to consider before getting your best friend aboard.

Yes, there are such thing as dog life vests. They can be found at specific pet shops and even, sometimes, boating shops. If worse comes to worst, your dog will be able to float in the water a lot easier than without a vest.

Another factor most dog owners do not take into consideration is sunscreen (and we don’t mean just for you.) Dog sunscreen is super crucial for most breeds of dogs with short hair. No need to worry—lightweight sunscreen, such as, SPF 15 should cover it. Be sure to check that the sunscreen is unscented or has a natural scent to avoid skin irritation.

Hopefully you have considered a plan of action when it comes to emergencies. When bringing your pup aboard, make sure that you update that emergency plan to include them. Accidents happen. Be prepared!

Let’s face it, the less time you have to deal with anything that goes wrong, the better. This preparation is stress relief. Ahhhh.

3. Put your boat on a boatlift

More than anything, we want you and your family (even the furriest members) to enjoy your boating adventures together for a long time. Most don’t know this, but there are ways to elongate your boat’s lifetime.

Invest in a boatlift for your boat! Summerset has found that most boaters wish they would have gotten a boatlift sooner to protect their boat.

I know you are wondering why it’s so beneficial to have a boatlift in your possession.

Keeping your boat above water when not in use, helps with less maintenance and upkeep. In fact, we have seen significant reduction in boat repairment after customers’ get their boatlift.

Additionally, boatlifts are a huge convenience. We don’t know about you, but it’s a good summer day when you are able to get in your boat with your dog and sail off within minutes.

Imagine being able to give your dog a lifetime worth of boating. Enjoyment on the lake is the top of our priority list for you and your furry friends.

When planning your next day out on the boat, consider the best ways to enjoy your time.

Consult us on ANY of your fun boating needs. You can learn more on our website at https://summersetboatlifts.com/.

See you on the lake!
