The History of Bagnell Dam

The Lake of the Ozarks, one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States, wouldn't be here today if it weren't for Bagnell Dam. With a surface area of 55,000 acres, stretching 92 miles long, and more shoreline than the state of California, this lake brings in millions of dollars in tourism to Missouri each year. The Lake is what our Lake of the Ozarks boat lift business thrives on. Let's take a look into the past at how Bagnell Dam and the #1 Recreational Lake in the country was created!

Construction of the Bagnell Dam

It was the year 1912, when a Kansas City man by the name of Ralph W. Street first proposed damming the Osage River to generate electricity. It wasn't until 1924 that Mr. Street and Walter Cravens, also of Kansas City, arranged financing and formed the Missouri Hydro-Electric Power Company. Unfortunately, financial difficulties brought the project to a halt in 1926. Just a few years later on July 27, 1929, Union Electric Company of St. Louis (now known as Ameren Missouri) bought the facilities and on August 6 construction resumed. Construction continued throughout the Great Depression, attracting thousands of workers from all across the United States. More than 20,000 people worked on the project and while some steam shovels and other powered equipment was available, the majority of the labor was done by hand. They worked for as low as 35 cents an hour.  Construction was completed just two years after the work began. On October 16, 1931 commercial operation of the Osage Power Plant began.

Bagnell Dam Fun Facts

The project was truly massive! Let's take a look at some interesting facts about the Bagnell Dam's construction.
Courtesy of the Missouri State Archives
  • Nearly 60,000 acres of land had to be acquired.
  • About 30,000 acres of trees and brush were cleared.
  • One million cubic yards of earth and rock had to be moved.
  • Enough concrete was poured to build an 18-foot-wide highway from St. Louis to Topeka, Kansas.
  • Enough carloads of material were used in the dam to fill a freight train stretching from St. Louis to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
  • The dam is of concrete gravity type, 2,543 feet long.
  • Approximately 5,082 cubic yards of concrete were poured in a single day during the construction period.
  • The spillway section is equipped with twelve flood gates, each 34 feet wide by 23 feet high.
  • Each flood gate weighs 27 tons.
  • Each flood gate is capable of discharging 101,000 gallons of water per second.
  • The water impounded in the reservoir is enough to supply the daily needs of the city of St. Louis for more than 12 years.
  • The dam supports a 20 foot wide roadway and a 3 foot wide sidewalk.
  • Union Electric created nearly 10,000 new jobs during the worst depression the United States had ever seen.
  • The project was completed in 18 ½ months.
  • The power station is 511 feet long and the flood control spillway section is 520 feet long.
  • The power plant produces 215,000 kilowatts of electricity, mainly to the eastern part of Missouri and St. Louis.

Engineers proudly predicted the amount of electricity the Osage Power Plant would generate in future years, but no one dreamed of the millions of hours of recreation, the Lake of the Ozarks would provide for tourists, local residents and second homeowners alike. Next time your out boating at the Lake of the Ozarks, be sure to drive your boat over by Bagnell Dam and check it out. While you're out on the water, keep Summerset Boat Lifts in mind for all of your boat lift needs. Whether you're looking for a new boat lift at Lake of the Ozarks or just need your old one repaired, we've got you covered!

Premier Galva-Hoist Dealer at Lake of the Ozarks

Since 1982, Summerset Boat Lifts has been Lifting your Dreams... From Canoes to Cruisers! We're proud to offer Galva-Hoist floating boat lifts, which are engineered right here at the Lake and are designed to withstand the roughest waters at the Lake of the Ozarks. No matter what brand of boat or dock you have, the Lake of the Ozarks Galva-Hoist provides great value and performance. Take a look at some of our new boat lifts ranging from personal watercraft lifts up to custom 20,000+ lb lifts.

Personal Watercraft Lifts

Our personal watercraft lifts come in either side mount or front mount styles. The front mount lifts offer a single tank solution, which by design, holds your machine higher out of the water. We also offer double places lifts for those of you that own a pair of jet skis and want to save on the price of purchasing a lift for each one.

4,000 & 6,000 lb Lifts

The 6,500 lb lift is an ideal capacity for almost every Tritoon on the Lake of the Ozarks. For any of your smaller boats, a 4,000-6,000 lb lift will do the trick. The mechanism and structure of these lifts are well suited for the rough waters here at Lake of the Ozarks.

8,000 & 10,000 lb Lifts

Our 8,000 lb boat lifts are unique to the industry in that the structure has c-channel on the bottom of the tanks! The lower structure creates a rigid box dispensing the weight of the boat across many more load points than the competition. The 10,000 lb boat lift utilizes the same structure and mechanism, but allows the opportunity to grow into a bigger boat utilizing the same lift.

12,000 - 17,000 lb Lifts

Our 12,000 to 17,000 lb lifts are heavy duty 6-arm mechanisms, designed for the rough waters of the Lake of the Ozarks. Our 14,000 lb lift is the first to offer 3 tanks; this allows for the added capacity and does a great job keeping those big boats level.  Capable of lifting many of the 34 and 35 foot day cruisers, the 17,000lb lift is again "best in class".

20,000 lb and Bigger Lifts

The 20,000lb lift is an 8-arm mechanism ideally suited for many 37 to 41 foot day cruisers. The 24,000lb lift is available in 8-arm or 10-arm mechanisms, with a 4 tank system. The lift offers a superb weight to width ratio in stability for your boat. Anything larger than that can be custom built just for you!

At Summerset Boat Lifts, we pride ourselves in service and it's what sets us apart from everyone else. We want everyone to relax knowing all their boat lift needs are being handled by professionals. Summerset's record of service after the sale in unparalleled in the boat lift industry. We don't just sell you a lift, we sell you our service. Boat Lift Maintenance Tips to Perform Before Winter Hits

Temperatures are cooling and winter will be here before you know it. After a long season of running your boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks, it could probably use some maintenance. Before you winterize you're boat and leave your lift untouched for the winter months, make sure everything is in proper working condition - that way, when spring rolls around, you're boat lift is ready for use!

Boat Lift Maintenance Tips

  • Raise your boat lift out of the water and rinse it. Leaving it submerged for prolonged periods of time accelerates deterioration. Make sure you get all that dirt and grime rinsed off before it sits all winter long.
  • Visually inspect all moving parts, bushings, hoses and hose clamps for any loose items, punctures or anything else that is out of place.
  • Make sure all nuts, bolts and hose clamps are properly tightened.
  • Remove the motor cover and clean out any debris that may have gotten in there over the course of the summer.
  • Visually inspect the motor and bearings for any damage or part wear.
  • Check the carpet bunks for any worn areas or tears. Make repairs or replace spots as necessary.
  • Inspect the condition of the bunks and replace them if any are cracked or split.

Bonus Tip

  • It is recommended that you operate your lift occasionally throughout the winter months. This keeps the motor contacts and brushes clean, plus keeps everything evenly lubricated through extended periods of no boating activity. By simply running your lift for about 1 minute in each direction, you can reduce the chances of having issues when you go to actually use it next spring!

If you notice anything out of the ordinary with your boat lift, give Summerset Boat Lifts a call at 573-348-5073. We pride ourselves in service and that's what sets apart! For all of your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift repair and maintenance needs, we're here to make certain you and your boat get the very best level of service at the Lake. 9 Tips for Winterizing Your Boat

It's October and boating season is winding down. Now is the time to start thinking about winterizing your boat. Spending some time and effort now on your boat will keep it in tip top shape, saving you time, effort and money when spring rolls around. Here are a few tips for winterizing your boat from your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer.

Winterizing Your Boat

The first step in winterizing your boat should be to make a list of all the tasks to be accomplished. You want to make sure you don't leave anything out. Be sure to check your owner's manual for their recommendations on what needs to be done to winterize your specific boat. Below is a list of general tips that everyone should follow when winterizing their boat.

General Boat Winterizing Tips

1. Inboard Engines - You'll want to change the oil before storing your boat for the winter. To change the oil, heat up the oil first by running the engine for awhile. The warm oil allows for impurities to drain away. While you're changing the oil filter, you'll also want to flush it out with fresh water. Then be sure to re-fill the oil to proper levels and check for any leaks. Then flush the engine with non-toxic antifreeze by using an intake hose to the water pump. Start the engine and allow the antifreeze to circulate. In addition, you should change the transmission fluid, as well as remove the spark plugs and spray each cylinder with fogging oil.

2. Outboard Engines - Flush the engine with fresh water using flush muffs or the flushing port usually on the back of the engine. Then start the engine, and while it's running with the cowl removed, spray fogging solution into the air intakes on the front of the engine. Then remove the fuel line from the engine and continue spraying fogging solution until the engine dies. This step is important because you don't want any fuel in the carburetors. By removing the fuel, you'll prevent build-up of deposits from evaporated fuel. Finally you'll want to apply water resistant grease to the propeller shaft and threads, change the gear oil in the lower unit and lightly lubricate the exterior of the engine or polish with a good wax.

3. Stern Drives - Thoroughly inspect the stern drive to remove any plant life or other debris. Drain the gear case and check for moisture in the oil. Moisture could indicate leaking seals that would need to be repair before boat use in the spring. Clean the lower unit with soap and water. If your stern has rubber boots, check for cracks or pinholes. Finally grease all fittings and check fluid levels in hydraulic steering or lift pumps.

4. Bilges - Use hot water, soap and a stiff brush to clean up any oil spills. Once the bilges are clean, spray them with a moisture displacing lubricant and add a little antifreeze to keep any water from freezing.

5. Fuel - If there is any fuel remaining in the tank, you'll want to treat it with fuel stabilizer. Some manufacturers even recommend refilling your tank to reduce space for condensation to form. Be sure to change the fuel filters and water separators.

6. Fresh Water System - You'll want to completely drain the fresh water tank and hot water heater. Isolate the hot water by disconnecting the in and out lines to then connect them together. Pump a non-toxic antifreeze into the system and run all faucets until the antifreeze is coming out. You'll also want to put some non-toxic antifreeze into the water heater.

7. Head - Pump out the holding tank at an approved facility. While pumping, add fresh water to the bowl and flush it several times. Use the recommended solution in your owners manual to let sit for a few minutes before flushing with fresh water again. Pump non-toxic antifreeze through hoses, holding tank, y-valve, macerator and discharge hose. Check your owners manual to make sure the type of antifreeze being used won't damage your system.

8. Interior - Once you've taken care of everything to do with the system, remove any valuables, electronics, lines, PFD, fire extinguishers, flares, fenders, etc. to be cleaned and checked over the winter, and then replaced if needed. Open all doors and lockers to make sure everything is thoroughly cleaned before you lock it up for the winter. Turn any cushions up on edge to help air circulate around them or better yet bring them home with you to keep them in the best shape possible. Open and clean the refrigerator and freezer. To keep your boat dry and mildew-free throughout the winter, you might want to install a dehumidifier or use some of the commercially available odor and moisture absorbing products.

9. Batteries - Disconnect the battery cables and remove the battery from the boat. Clean the battery and terminal ends with a water and baking soda solution. Be sure to rinse thoroughly with clean water. Apply a light coat of grease on the terminal end of the battery and cables. Store the battery in a cool, dry place with a trickle charger to keep it charged through the winter to it's ready to go in the spring.

In addition to winterizing your boat, you'll want to make sure your boat lift is also prepared for the cold weather to come. This is one aspect of winterizing that many people often forget. We want our customers to relax knowing their boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks will make it through the winter!
