Be Safe Out on the Water this Memorial Day Weekend!

Memorial Day Weekend marks the start of Boating Season and Summerset Boat Lifts is here to help you with all your boat lift needs!  Everyone is excited to get out on the water and celebrate, but remember to take safety precautions. Operator inexperience, inattention, recklessness and speeding are the four leading causes of tragic watercraft crashes and drowning is the leading cause of death.  Crash statistics show that those who wear life jackets and take boater safety courses are more likely to stay safe on the water!  We wanted to provide you with the some basic boating safety tips to help keep you safe this holiday weekend.

1. Leave the Alcohol Onshore

Never use drugs or alcohol before or during boat operation.  Alcohol's effects are greatly exaggerated by exposure to sun, glare, wind, noise and vibration.  Yes, Memorial Day Weekend is a time for celebration, but save the alcohol for when you get back and crank up the BBQ Grill.  If you must bring it on board with you, be sure to have a designated captain.

2. Be Weather Wise

Although we are all hoping for some great weather this Memorial Day Weekend, it never fails that we get some rain when we are trying to have some fun outdoors.  Be sure to check the weather before you head out and keep an eye on the weather while you are out on the water.  It would also be a good idea to bring a radio on board with you.  Sudden wind shifts, lightning flashes and choppy water all can mean a storm in brewing.  If bad weather is approaching, get off the water as quickly as possible to keep safe.  You don't want to be out in the middle of the Lake when a storm hits.

3. Use and Maintain the Right Safety Equipment

Have a US Coast Guard approved life jacket for each person on board and one approved throwable device.  It is suggested that everyone where their life jackets while on the water.  Be sure to have a fire extinguiser on board and make sure all the boat lights are operating correctly. Even if you are going out in daylight, you never know what could happen and you could be stuck on the water after dark.  You also should keep an emergency supplies kit in a floating pouch on board.  This should include a cell phone, maps, flares and a first aid kit.

4. Follow a Checklist Before Heading Out

Start by letting someone know where you are going and when you will be returning. Open all the hatches and run the blower before you take off and after you refuel. Sniff for fumes before starting the engine and if you smell some, do not start the engine. Check for any local regulations that you will need to follow.

5. Don't Overload the Boat

Overloading a boat with gear or passengers will make the boat unstable and increase the risk of capsizing or swamping.  Abide by the boats capacity plate which is located near the boat operators position.

6. Follow the Rules

Never allow passengers to ride on gunwales, seat backs or outside of the protective railings, including the front of a pontoon boat.  A sudden turn, stop, start or wave could cause them to fall overboard.  After leaving the boat launch or boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks maintain slow, no-wake speed for a safe and legal distance from the launch.  Be sure to follow all boat traffic rules as well.  Just like on the road, abiding by traffic rules will help keep your group safe out on the water.

While you're out on the water this weekend, make sure that not only is your boat working properly, but also that your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift is also in proper working condition.  If you have a problem with your lift, give us a call!  You'll be surprised at how soon you may see a representative of Summerset Boat Lifts on your dock.  We want to earn your trust and your business!

Choosing the Right Size Boat Lift for Your Boat

Here at Summerset Boat Lifts, we specialize in Galva-Hoist floating boat lifts.  Galva-Hoist is engineered at the lake for The Lake…Lake of the Ozarks. The Galva-Hoist is extremely capable of withstanding the roughest waters here at the lake. No matter what brand of boat or dock you have, the Galva-Hoist at the Lake of the Ozarks provides great value and performance.  Now your only challenge is deciding what size lift you need for your boat. BoatLiftBlog.com has a great list of things to consider.

Find the Overall Weight

When determining the weight of your boat, you need to account for many other things besides just the dry weight of the unit.  You need to think about all the extras you have added since you bought it such as fuel, gear, non-factory additions and additional water on board.  This will give you a more accurate weight allowing you to choose the correct capacity for your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift.
  • The dry weight of your watercraft is usually provided on the specification sheet for the unit.  If not, visit www.NADAGuides.com to find the information you need.  Remember that the dry weight listed typically doesn't account for outboard motors.
  • Depending on the temperature, type and blend, gasoline weighs 5.91 to 6.42 lbs per gallon.  With this information and the capacity of your fuel tank, you can get a rough estimate on how much weight a full fuel tank will add to your watercraft.
  • Be sure to account for all the extra things you have stored in your boat such as skis, wakeboards, anchors, etc.
  • Non factory additions also need to be accounted for.  This includes anything not installed from the factory like wakeboard towers, bimini tops or additional seating.
  • Water weighs 8.34 lbs per gallon, so be sure to account for any live wells, ballasts or sacks that may be full when lifting your watercraft.

Find the Beam

Once you have determined the lift capacity, you need to find the beam.  The beam of a boat, pontoon or PWC is the most extreme width or breath of the watercraft.  Basically its the widest portion of your boat.  Once you've figured that out, you can determine the inside width needed to easily park your boat on the lift.  Its always a good idea to give yourself a cushion of about 10-12 inches.

At Summerset Boat Lifts, we pride ourselves in service.  We are here to help you choose the right size for your boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks.  From personal watercraft lifts all the way to custom 46,000 lb lifts, we've got you covered.  Visit our website to view our new and used boat lift options. 5 Boat Lift Maintenance Tips You Can Perform Yourself

A boat lift's job is to protect your boat from the rough waters and wind.  It should also isolate your hull's running gear from the damaging effects of in-water storage.  Boats not only perform better when not left in the water, but keeping them out of the Lake when not in use will help to prevent hull staining, blistering and premature corrosion of your boat.  Lower boat maintenance costs, more time on the water, better fuel mileage and retained resale value are all benefits of owning a boat lift at the Lake of the Ozarks. Although you will see less of a need for boat maintenance, it is important to regularly check your boat lift to make sure its working properly and doing its job of protecting your boat.  Below is a list of general maintenance tips that should be performed semi-annually.

1. Complete a visual inspection of all moving parts, bushings, hoses and hose clamps.  If you see something out of place, give Summerset Boat Lifts a call.

2. Check all nuts, blots and hose clamps with a wrench for tightness, ensuring they comply with torque specifications.

3. Remove the motor cover and clean out any debris that may have gotten in there.

4. Check carpeted bunks for worn areas and tears, replace them as necessary.

5. Inspect condition of wood bunks and replace them if any are cracked or split.

During the off-season or extended periods of no boating activity, you should occasionally operate your lift to keep it a peak performance.  By simply running the lift for about a minute in each direction, you will keep the motor clean and bearings evenly lubricated. If you have any questions about boat lift maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks or if there is problem to difficult for you to handle on your own, give Summerset Boat Lifts a call!  We pride ourselves in service, and it’s what sets us apart from everyone else. We want our customers to relax knowing their boat lift needs are being handled by professionals. Summerset’s record of service after the sale is unparallel in the boat lift industry. We don’t just sell you a lift, we sell you our service! We’re here to make certain you and your boat get the very best level of product and service at the Lake. We are Galva-Hoist. We are Summerset Boat Lifts, and we are Lifting Your Dreams… From Canoes to Cruisers!
