Christmas Traditions Around the World

With Christmas less than a week away, we thought it would be fun to share with you some of the different holiday traditions from around the world. Do any of these sound like fun to you, or are they a little weird?

Belgium: St. Nicholas’ Day

In Belgium, the Christmas celebrations occur on December 5th and 6th. Children get their shoes and put them by the fireplace for Saint Nicholas. In some homes, biscuits and carrots are also left out. Sinterklass (St. Nicholas) comes to the homes with his horse Zwarte Piet and then climbs from the roof top down the chimney.

Philippines: Giant Lantern Festival

In the Philippines, The Giant Lantern Festival is held on the Saturday before Christmas Eve. Eleven villages participate in the festival, which brings spectators from all over the world. Each village competes to build the best lantern.

Japan: Kentucky Fried Chicken Dinner

For the Japanese, Christmas is not as big of a deal as it is for other countries. The people do participate in gift-giving and light displays along with another strange tradition. On Christmas Day, families feast on Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner. In December 1974, KFC Japan ran an advertising promotion called "Kentucky for Christmas," and since then it's become quite customary to eat fried chicken for the holiday.

Colombia: Day of the Little Candles

To honor the Virgin Mary, the people of Colombia celebrate Day of the Little Candles. Paper lanterns and candles are placed in windows and front yards to honor the Immaculate Conception. Some neighborhoods have competitions to make the best arrangement.

Australia: Summer Time Christmas

During Christmas time in Australia, the weather is hot!  Kids have summer holidays, and some families choose to go camping and have BBQs to celebrate. Brush fires during Christmas are common and many volunteer to help save people and property from being destroyed. Christmas caroling, Christmas trees, and lights are also found in Australia, along with ‘Christmas Bush’ a flowering tree that is found in Australia.

Norway: Hide the Broom

The people of Norway try to avoid witches and evil spirits on Christmas. On the night of Christmas Eve, the people of Norway hide their brooms. It is believed that witches will not come around if the broom is hidden. In some homes, one member of the family will shoot a shotgun out the front door to warn away spirits.

Canada: North Pole Letters and Boxing Day

The Canadian post has a fun tradition of opening and replying to letters for Santa. All letters that say Santa Claus, North Pole, Canada, HOHOHO are replied to. The day after Christmas is known as boxing day in Canada and other countries that are connected to the UK. In the middle ages, collection boxes would be distributed to the poor on this day. Today, Boxing Day is similar to Black Friday, where many stores run discount prices and open early.

However, you choose to celebrate this holiday season, Summerset Boat Lifts hopes you have a very Merry Christmas! If you're in need of any boat lift services at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can trust us to get the job done right. With 30+ years of experience, we're your premier boat lift company at the Lake!

How Kasco De-Icers Work to Protect Your Property

De-icers are important for any boat enthusiast that lives, or at least stores their boat, in an area where temperatures are cold enough for ice to form on the water, such as Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. If you're new to the boating industry or just never really put much thought into de-icers, this blog is for you! Keep reading to learn how the Kasco De-Icer works and how it can protect your dock from ice damage this winter.

About Kasco

Nearly 50 years ago, Kasco invented the de-icer and is now the leading company in de-icing technology. The original de-icer was invented to allow year-round in-water boat storage, a huge benefit for marinas with limited on-land storage options. The company continues to provide the most innovative, reliable and efficient de-icing solutions available. Their range of products has solved de-icing challenges not just across the country, but around the world!

How Kasco De-Icers Work

Kasco De-Icers are known throughout the world for their quality, durability and effectiveness. The Kasco D-Series De-Icer became a staple of the industry by tackling some fiercely challenging applications. The de-icer works by moving large volumes of warm, bottom water to the surface. This eliminates and prevents ice formation around boats, docks, pilings, bulk heads or any other property you need protected from damaging ice formation. The water flow eliminates damaging ice expansion and ice jacking, as well as provides excellent aeration for winter months. The unique design of this product provides superior flow and excellent energy efficiency to solve your de-icing needs in a cost effective manner. By using a Kasco De-Icer, you are ensuring your property is protected from the harsh winter conditions.

Get your Kasco de-icer from Summerset Boat Lifts today! Not only are we here to provide boat lift service at the Lake of the Ozarks, but we want to do everything we can to keep your boat, dock and lift in tip-top shape, and that includes providing quality products such as the kasco de-icer. Safety Tips for Dealing with Possible Winter Dock Damage

Winter weather can present dangerous conditions on your boat dock. While it's best to avoid your dock in inclement weather, if you must get on your dock, use extra caution. Below you will find some winter dock safety tips from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift company.

1. Use Extra Caution When Removing Snow and Ice from Your Dock.

Dock owners often get concerned about the weight of snow and ice on their dock. It is possible, after a major snow storm, for that added weight to cause your dock to collapse. First and foremost, it's important that you have proper insurance to cover any incidents such as this. If you feel the need to remove snow and ice from your dock, be sure to use extra caution. Never go onto an icy dock alone, as it's easy to slip and fall into the water. Falling into frigid winter lake waters can cause hypothermia. When getting on a dock during the cold winter season, be sure to wear a life jacket and always use the buddy system.

2. Beware of Ice Damage to Your Dock.

During the winter season, ice can easily form on the top of the lake. That ice can slam into your dock causing damage. Be sure to inspect your dock for any damages and make sure it's completely secure. Icy conditions also weaken dock cables, which may need to be replaced before using the dock the following spring season. The best way to prevent ice damage to your dock is to invest in a de-icer for your dock. Kasco de-icers can be purchased from Summerset Boat Lifts!

3. Treat All Wires as Live Wires.

Water and electricity do not mix! It's important to use extra caution when dealing with wires on your dock. Winter weather can easily cause wires to become loose, frayed or damaged. When dealing with any wires, treat them all as live wires, even if you think you've shut off the power to your dock. If you suspect electrical damage on your dock, it's best to contact a professional electrician to inspect it and perform any necessary repairs.

Summerset Boat Lifts wants to make sure you, your dock, your boat and your boat lift all stay safe this winter season! While we don't know what's in store for us this winter, it's best to prepare now. From investing in a de-icer to ensuring your dock is in tip-top shape, preparing your property now can save you from costly repairs down the road - and will ensure your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift, dock and boat are all ready for use as soon as spring rolls around!

Preparing Your Dock, Lift and Boat for Winter

The winter season is quickly approaching and it's time to make sure your dock is prepared for the cold, winter weather. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer offers tips on preparing your dock and boat lift for winter.

1. Consider Purchasing a De-Icer.

To protect your dock, lift and boat from the icy waters during the winter season, consider purchasing a de-icer. Even if you're not storing your boat in the water, a de-icer will protect your dock and lift from ice damage. Ice can easily break up entire dock structures, as well as age the wood and even splinter the surface of the dock. A de-icer keeps the water around your dock from turning to ice. Purchase your de-icer from Summerset Boat Lifts today!

2. Winterize Your Boat.

Obviously the first step in preparing your boat dock for winter is to winterize your boat. The time and effort you spend on your boat now will affect your boats performance, or lack of it, when the season ramps back up. Prepping your boat now will save you time, effort and money when spring rolls around. In addition to winterizing the engine and other systems, make sure your boat is well covered with a tarp or other sturdy covering. Follow the owner's manual for all the steps involved in winterizing your particular boat.

3. Maintain Your Boat Lift.

Ideally, your boat lift should be maintained twice per year. Once in the fall (now) and once in the spring. Maintaining your lift is important for eliminating lost time on the water and reducing the likelihood of needing major boat lift repairs at the Lake of the Ozarks. By catching issues early, we can reduce major problems with your lift that could affect your boat and your dock. At Summerset Boat Lifts we service a variety of different types of boat lifts.

4. Make Sure You Have Insurance Coverage.

No matter how well you prepare your dock for the brutal winter weather, there's always a chance of something going wrong during a major snow storm. Therefore, it's important you have proper insurance coverage. Many people assume their homeowners insurance extends to their dock and lift, but that's not always true. In addition to the liability insurance, you'll want to make sure you have physical damage coverage that includes collapse due to heavy snow cover. The best way to make sure you're properly insured is to talk to a local, Lake of the Ozarks insurance agent.

Make sure your boat lift is in tip-top shape for when the season rolls back around by having us service it now! Summerset Boat Lifts is here for all your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift needs. From new and used lifts to service and repair, we've got you covered! In addition, we can supply you with de-icers and other accessories for your dock and boat. Give us a call at 573-348-5073.

Fall Fishing at Lake of the Ozarks

October is arguably one of the most beautiful times of year at the Lake of the Ozarks. It's the peak of the season, where autumn leaves are turning in color. The scenery combined with generally pleasant daytime temperatures make it the perfect time for a fishing trip. During the month of October, you're likely to find bass in their usual fall pattern. Unlike September when fish are found in the back of the creeks, this month they'll be scattered throughout the lake with no predominant location. You will also find that forage fish, or shad, are spreading out and can be found just about everywhere.

In-Water Boat Storage All Year Round

As much as we wish it wasn't true, the winter season at the Lake of the Ozarks is quickly approaching. Along with the beginning of winter means that it's the end of boating season. Many people are starting to winterize their boats and get them ready for the cold weather to come. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks boat lift dealer discusses how you can store your boat in the water all year round!

Winter Boat Storage

In the past, people would remove their boats from the water at the end of each season. The frigid waters of the lake during the winter months could form ice that would be damaging to a boat left sitting in it. Innovations in the boating industry have led us to the ability to store our boats in the water all year round now. The Galva-Hoist line of floating boat lifts from Summerset Boat Lifts allows your boat to be stored in the water without the boat actually touching the water. Complete dry storage is available in a wet environment. In addition, de-icers can be installed on your dock to ensure the water around your lift doesn't form ice.

In-Water Boat Storage

Being able to store your boat in the water all year round definitely has its benefits. One of the biggest benefits is that when the water warms up, your boat is available for immediate use. You don't have to haul it to the Lake and launch it again. Another benefit is that you don't have to pay to store it somewhere else. If you don't have a garage or somewhere to store it on your property, a storage unit could be quite costly. No matter the brand of boat or dock you have, the Galva-Hoist at the Lake of the Ozarks offers great value to keep your boat in the water year round!

Whether you're in need of a new lift or you just want to make sure your lift is in proper working condition to protect your boat through the winter season, Summerset Boat Lifts has you covered! We pride ourselves in service, and that's what sets us apart in the industry. We want our customers to relax knowing their boat lift needs are being handed by professionals. Give us a call at 573-348-5073 for all your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift service needs!

Lifts for Boats Large and Small

No matter the size of your boat, Summerset Boat Lifts can lift it! We are proud to offer the Galva-Hoist line of floating boat lifts, which provide quality and value. From personal watercraft lifts to custom 38,000+ lb lifts, the Galva-Hoist has your Lake of the Ozarks boat lift needs covered. Keep reading to learn more about the lifts we can offer you at Summerset Boat Lifts!

Personal Watercraft Lifts

Our personal watercraft lifts come in 3 styles: side-mount, single front-mount and double front-mount. The side mount PWC lift is ideal for those looking to save space, as the footprint on the dock is only 5 1/2 feet instead of 11 feet. The flagship of our PWC line, the poly tank front-mount unit is quite capable of withstanding any water conditions. The single-tank by design will hold your watercraft higher out of the water than a double-tank would. The double is an extension of our popular single tank design.

4,000 & 6,000 LB Lifts

The 6,500 lb lift is an ideal capacity for almost every tritoon on the Lake of the Ozarks. the mechanism and structure of the lift are well-suited for the rough waters that our lake has to offer during the busy summer months. From a 24 foot deck boat to a 27 foot tritoon with a 300 hp outboard, this is the boat lift for your needs.

8,000 & 10,000 LB Lifts

Our 8,000 lb boat lifts are unique to the industry in that the structure has c-channel on the bottom of the tanks, which allows the weight of the boat to be distributed across many more points than the competition. The 10,000 lb lift utilizes the same structure and mechanism, giving you the opportunity to grow into a bigger boat utilizing the same lift later on.

12,000 - 17,000 LB Lifts

Our 12,000 lb lift is a heavy-duty 6-arm mechanism designed for the rough waters of the Lake of the Ozarks. Our 14,000 lb lift is our first 3-tank system, and builds on the foundation of our 12,000 lb lift. The 17,000 lb lift caps off the trio of 6-arm mechanisms available. It is perfectly capable of lifting many of the 34 to 35 foot day cruisers.

20,000 LB & Bigger Lifts

Suited for many 37-41 foot day cruisers, the 20,000 lb lift is an 8-arm mechanism that features four structures that create a rigid box to dissipate the weight of the boat over many points on the lift and dock. The 24,000 lb lift is available in an 8-arm or 10-arm mechanism. The four tank system offers a superb weight to width ratio, offering great stability for your boat. Larger lifts can be custom built just for you! Your exquisite taste in big boats demands the best in boat lifts.

Our new boat lift sales at the Lake of the Ozarks is complimented by used boat lifts, as well as the servicing of all types of lifts. Whether you're in need of a boat lift or boat lift repairs at the Lake of the Ozarks, Summerset Boat Lifts is here for you! Give us a call at 573-348-5073.
